A Life in the Theatre by David Mamet is a good play to read. It is a short read, with 26 very quick scenes. I have never seen this play performed, though I would like to. I do not consider myself an expert on play or a play-lover, but this one I thought was very good.
John and Robert are the only two characters: they are a younger and older actor, respectively. Their relationship is explored through backstages and onstage scenes. It is metatheatrical.
