The TI-89 is far more powerful than some of the older models in that it can symbolically evaluate derivatives and integrals, something your TI-83 (and not even MATLAB) can't do. It can even solve differential equations for you. Many of the commands are similar to MATLAB, so if you are used to that, it is good. Programming on the 89 is quite a bit more difficult than on the 83, but still doable. Generally, it seems like an 83 will get you through about pre-calculus, but the 89 will help you go further and will help you in calculus (single and multi variable), differential equations, and linear algebra.... read full review »

Re. your post below on Sciforums, I understand side lengths being reciprocals in -2D, but explain where the sqrt(-1) comes in for the diagonals: Assuming it has a side length of 5, a -2D object would be something with an 'area' of 1/25 and a diagonal of 5i(2)^1/2. A -3D object would be something with a 'volume' of 1/125 and a diagonal of 5i(3)^1/2. I can't fathom something that looks like this... and its obviously imaginary..... so we really can't understand it. - lazcisco
