    My grandmother used to slather Vicks VapoRub on us when we were kids and now I do the same to my child.  Nothing works like it.  It instantly opens nasal passages and I find the smell to be very soothing - maybe it just brings back memories of being cared for by Grandma.  I never liked to give my young daughter children's cold medicine (plus she hates the taste) but I've never hesitated using Vicks on her.
