I don't think you can go wrong with Singer.  I leared to sew on one and my school sold it to me the year after I finished school.  I still own that machine and it is one of my faves.  I am now 65 years old.  Yes, it is electric!  What does that say for the way a Singer lasts?  Volumes!

Naturally the new ones do much more than my old machine and that is why I sometimes have to have a new one.  This latest Singer in my collection is a prize.
