    I think it always more comfortable for the child and parent to walk the to the gate together, but my step daughter is considerably youner than your son. Also, I would think it depends on the departure airport. We fly out of Atlanta, so that airport can be very intimidating and confusing to a first time alone flyer. Keep in mind that as soon as you get to the gate they will seat the unaccompanied minor on the plane, so it isnt like you will have to sit and wait to board like normal passengers do. However, reguardless, you will have to stay in the airport until his flight is in the air. I think the carry-on idea to be the best for us too.
