I bought an HP Pavillion dv5-1388 laptop a few weeks ago for about $450 (after discounts and taxes), and am pretty happy with it so far. The price was extremely low compared to comparable other computers, but that's because I ended up getting several discounts. It's a standard mid-range computer, and the processor speed, memory (3GB) and hard drive size (250 GB) should be good enough for almost everybody.
