Mercedes Lackey's first book, this one is an awesome intro into the world of Valdemar. The characters are real and fun, and this is the book that got me hooked on her writings. Don't be daunted by the sight of all the books she's written, because they are each good in their own right and are fairly quick reads divided mostly into trilogies, and each trilogy can be read in and of itself without needing the rest of the series to make it make sense.
