I wrote this after a visit with my 93 year old mother .
With Her Today
Yesterday is today and memories are now,
In the depths of her soul
The smell of honeysuckle in the evening shade,
Playing kickball with her cousins,
A first kiss,The birth of a son,
Death of a husband,
Laughter on a rainy afternoon
All of these things are now, not a remembered thing,
For she sees, hears, and feels them now.
They could not have happened sixty, fifty, twenty or even yesterday
For they are in her now and she feels them
She smells and touches them in every waking moment
She talks with her husband and soothes her child
She laughs when no one else is laughing
She sings a song only she can hear
She is living, she is alive
Just not with us at this moment and time
She is with those that have already passed
Those who she has held ever so close to her heart
They are with her now living, breathing inside her, around her
We may not see or hear them, but they are there
She caresses them and feels their touch
Just as we touch and caress her and feel her old weathered skin
She is happy and alive and we are happy
She has found her family again and lives with them once more.
