INSTANT REPLAY

This December marks the 46th anniversary of the first instant replay which occurred on December 7, 1963 during the Army-Navy Game played in Philadelphia and telecast by CBS-TV. It was invented by CBS Sports' top director, then 29 year-old Tony Verna.

Verna's account of how he was able to combine the limited abilities of the videotape machines can be found in two of his early books, Live TV and Global Television (both Focal Press) and the 2008 book release: Instant Replay, the day that changed sports forever from Creative Publishers International. Verna's broadcast hallmark was an ability to continually come up with advances in the use of cameras, program content and creative interplay. It was this skill that prompted him to use a trick left over from radio days in order to outwit the technology of the times and allow for a play on the field to be re-broadcast "instantly."
