A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier is a nonfiction account of the author's childhood and adolescence, focusing on how drastically his life was affected by the civil war in Sierra Leone (where he grew up). Though every bit of it is true, this book reads like a novel. It is riveting in its descriptions and the story Mr. Beah has to tell.
While the gruesome brutality present in parts of this book is not for the faint of heart, this story is about much more than the author's experience as an unwilling recruit for the government army; it is also about how his life was touched and forever changed...read full review »
