My husband and I got lucky when we had our son. most of our big ticket items were either gifts or reliable hand-me-downs. However, when our son grew too big for his small car seat that had two seperate bases (one in each vehicle) we faced an option. Move the car seat from vehicle to vehicle twice per day because I drop him off at daycare and my husband picks him up; or buy a second car seat.
