Are you making reference to the electronic version? Once you have the phase in your hand you use the stylus and select phase. It will flash to tell you which part of the phase to lay down. For example: It wants you to lay down set of four. So you would put your stylus on all four numbers that complete that set and then put the stylus on set of four. Then if you have to play a run of four you would put stylus on the four numbers that give you the consecutive run say, 2, 3,4,5 and then choose the run.
