Probably the biggest two problems: Edward Cullen is an abusive sexist pig, and Bella Swann is a shallow unreliable narrator. Perhaps it is best to start with Bella.
From the time we are introduced to her, we are told that Bella is not beautiful, she does not fit in, she's really smart and totally selfless and so incredibly mature. We are shown that Bella knows she is extremely beautiful (when taking stock of herself in the mirror, she refers to her paleness as being "ivory-skinned", for example).
