Ziploc Vacuum Starter Kit —

I purchased the Ziploc Vacuum Starter Kit out of curiosity and the fact that the grocery store display had a $2 off coupon to try it.  At a store price of $3.99 it meant I was only paying $1.99 for the starter kit.  That was a great price to see if I liked it or not. [ I am told they are even cheaper in other parts of the country.]

Compare to Electric Models:
I have an electric sealer but I rarely use it because it is big and bulky and a pain to get out each time I want to seal something.  The bags are expensive and so I have ended up using it as a storage product when I want to seal in bulk.  The Ziploc system is simple and only needs the bags and hand pump.  It stores easily in the drawer to be at your fingertips to use in a moment's notice.

The Ziploc Vacuum protects food against freezer burn:
Because you are sucking the air out creating a vacuum seal around the food it stays fresh longer and retains its color and texture.

The Ziploc Vacuum Does Not Require Batteries or Electricy to run:
Simply fill the bag, lay flat, squeeze out the air, press the end of the zipper and slide across until sealed.  Place the pump over the the small valve in the top corner of the bag.  Pumping up and down remove the air and remove pump.  Store in Freezer.

The Ziploc Vacuum is Easy to Use and Small enough to Store in Drawer:
The pump is about 8-9 inches long when the plunger is in.  Add a box of bags and you are good to go.

The starter kit comes with three quart size bags and one pump.   Although the box says it is recommended to use the bags only once I think there may be circumstances when you should be able to use a bag again.

I have a FoodSaver system and it is still in the box, maybe to be given as a gift. I bought the Ziplock Vacuum pump and some bags and used it today. I am amazed. I bought a large package of hotlinks and used a few. The rest I stored in the bags. The pump is soooo easy to use and it sucked the air right out making the links look like store bought packaging. I love this thing.

Thanks for adding that. Good to know!

There is one more advantage to the Ziploc vacuum. It's easy to take apart and clean. This means you could put meat in a marinade and vacuum out the air. Other vacuums would be ruined or next to impossible to clean if any liquid got inside but not with this.

In response to AnnaBanana's comment from Sep 1, 2008 at 5:38PM:

My daughter has been using ziploc bags for years for travel. She zips the zipper almost closed after inserting a straw in one corner and then sucks the air out that way. It works on the same principle but can give you a real headache! I've used the spacebags- same idea.

Doesn't this sound like it would be great for packing to travel as well? What a great idea!
