When I cook dinner, we have a main meat dish, a veggie, and some kind of carb side dish, usually potatoes or rice. I've really been getting bored with plain old rice, so I've been trying out other side options like stuffing, cous cous, and flavored rice. Enter Zatarain's Cheddar Broccoli Rice.
I've seen many flavored rices but they usually don't interest me, so when I saw a Cheddar Broccoli version on the shelf, I decided to check it out. It is very easy to make: you simply add 2 and 1/4 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of butter, and the contents of the box of Zatarain's Cheddar Broccoli Rice. After you stir it up, you bring everything to a boil, cover and simmer it for 25 minutes, and then let stand for 5 minutes before eating.
This is a processed product that contains a fluorescent orange cheese powder that reminds me of Kraft mac-n-cheese. It is "cheesy" but doesn't have a true broccoli flavor. This Zatarain's Rice Mix certainly isn't disgusting but it also isn't gourmet food. This is a flavorful rice blend that is a nice occasional change from the usual potatoes or plain white rice. I'll buy it again.
