It's pretty hard to believe that YouTube is not yet barely four years old. I know, I can't believe it either and I'm writing this piece.
What's even more amazing is how this site launched in 2005 has gone from an amusing site that allowed anyone to upload and share videos with everyone else in the world to a point now where it is the "Official Public Record". That's right. If you did it and someone saw you do it, you just may show up on YouTube. So be warned, better watch your Ps & Qs!
I find I watch it everyday for things like videos of new electronics reviews to the day's most interesting political events.
During the recent Presidential Election Campaign I really got hooked. Sure there were the real campaign events captured but there was also Tina Fey giving us her best Sarah Palin. Golden moments indeed.
What inspired me to write this piece today was an email I received from my sister-in-law this morning with a link to a compilation of David Letterman's "Great Moments in Presidential Speeches" segment that has been running every night for the past 3 years.

Be warned that before viewing this compilation remove all beverages from your computer area and have a supply of Kleenex handy. Go ahead. Cut and paste it into your browser. I'll wait here. Back? Good. Let's proceed.
Wow! With the results of the recent change in administration it's going to take me some time getting used to listening to the first English speaking President of the 21st century.
There but for the grace of God
Watching this compilation and thinking about the new power of this website one can only imagine the size of the bullet dodged by Bill Clinton during his term in office! And to think, he had the guy who "invented" the Internet working for him! Lucky man indeed.
Pot of Gold
What's truly amazing is that before the site was even a year-old, Google bought it for $1.6B! Yes, while I was pounding out reviews for pennies Google paid these guys $1.6B. What the hell was going through my mind. Sheesh!
Anyone Can Do It
Going viral on YouTube couldn't be easier. In fact my new Flip Mino Camcorder includes software to automatically upload content to YouTube. I'm really tempted to start a daily segment. But that would probably ruin my U.S. Witness Protection Program gig and I'd be toast! Then I wouldn't be able to write pieces like this at 10:30PM on a Saturday night.
My Viewpoint
If you haven't caught YouTube fever, you owe it to yourself to visit this site. It's funny, serious, informative and even addictive. Mostly it's a good time. I recommend it.
Regards,
Rudi
