I grew up with an adorable Yorkie and would recommend the breed to anyone who wants a very devoted dog and can handle their fragility. They are quick to defend their "family," so it's a good idea to make sure they get to know anyone new as gently as possible.
There are only two real drawbacks with the breed:
1) They are fragile. While they're pretty good with kids, you don't want them around anyone who wants to roughhouse with the dog.
2) To meet the AKC standard their ears are clipped and their tails are docked. If your dog is "just" a pet, don't bother putting the animal through the surgical stuff. I saw one that had its tail intact and it was beautiful.
