Yelp.com is a website where you can read and write reviews on restaurants, shopping and other services in your own town like favorite salon, spa, dog groomer, etc.  You also have the option of reviewing places/services in other cities.

One of the best features about Yelp.com is the reviews are true, informative and intelligent.  You will not find reviews consisting of three words like "It is great", or "I like it".  Nor will you find reviews that are direct quotes (or basically copied word for word) from the service/product website, as so many reviews are on Viewpoints.

So if you are a true writer and reader of reviews, I would higly recommend using Yelp.com for informative and complete reviews.

Sounds great! I am always looking for new restaurants to try out! Thanks for the info!

Yelp.com as from an advertisers view point is a step above myspace. Some of the users are not the brightest cookies, and as a business owner really remember whom do you want to visit your business.

Being able to delete and/or update are real pluses. Are you on any other interesting sites you'd recommend?

Another difference between the two is if you feel you want to leave Yelp or you write a review and want to delete it, you may do so on your own without contacting the administrators of the site. I wrote a review on a place that I had a manicure in. Three weeks later they went out of business and I was able to delete my review without asking for permission.

Sounds like different things bother each of us. I think it's great that you've met people and gone out with them to your local places. I can definitely see Yelp.com's usefulness in this regard. Regarding "rights": As I look back at Viewpoint's legalese, anything we write on EITHER site can be used for its own purposes by the sites. Sorry. I'd misread that in Viewpoints' small print. Yelp.com was definitely more up front on this point!

I am confused about your comment. You say the commercial element at Yelp is stronger there than here....not quite sure I get what u mean. At Yelp they aren't constantly tossing things at you to review...ie: Sears, LCD TV's....that's commercial; pumping out reviews for advertisers. Especially given the fact that so many product reviews here are written without even trying the product. I find Yelp to be refreshing as it creates a more local group atmosphere from within your own location. As a matter of fact, I have a great bunch of locals I have met and we have all gone out to dinner already. We review local places and services that we know, use and have tried. Another thing I found somewhat confusing is you asked me if have "Any hesitation about having (basically) no rights at all?" Actually, I have absolutely no idea what you mean by that.

Just signed up for Yelp but have to give some more thought to reviewing. The commercial element is so much stronger there than here. How do you feel about reviewing there? Any hesitation about having (basically) no rights at all? I'm glad you reviewed the site. It's given me something to think about.

Just heard about this for the first time yesterday. Hope that next time you look I'll have something about Eagle Rock, CA on it. Thanks for the reminder about the site!

I noticed on your review number that you've hit 101. I hadn't heard from you in a while so I'll say hello here. I think we have a pretty eclectic mix here at Viewpoints. Some do the one-liners. Some do cut and paste. However, quite a few of us try to produce some unique, personal, unbiased, and helpful reviews. I've learned a few things and have "met" some interesting people here.

I hope you're doing well. I've missed hearing from you!
