Yamaha V-Star 650 Classic - 2007 Motorcycle —

My Yamaha V Star 650 Classic is pearl white and definitely commands quiet admiration and respect -- unlike the more gawdily turned out bikes out there. Be careful not to tack on too much jewelry or studding, since Yamaha's done a great job designing this classic beauty, with just enough brightwork to generate oohs and aahs (instead of "Holy Cr*p!"). Yes, it does get mistaken for a (much, much more expensive) Harley-Davidson, and I've even seen some V Star Classics with H.D. insignias attached (shame!). This civilized but powerful beast is in its own class and is no H.D. wanna-be. The fit and finish is exceptional. The handling, shifting and throttling are smooth as silk. The pipes don't scream, that's true -- but they do sort of growl, which is kind of cool, actually. 505 pounds is far lighter than an 1100 or 1300, and the handline reflects it -- but it looks like a beefy/brawny and much heavier bike. And maybe it's just me, but there's something oddly amiable and proud about this Veester. Was consiodering a 750 or an 1100, but this 650's ratio and power is more than adequate (although, yes, it needs a 6th gear -- but that's not a deal breaker, even well above 65-70 MPH). Add highway bars, a running-lamp bar, a short screen and leather (not hard plastic) bags, and you have a beautifully appointed and wonderful performer.
