I bought a used Yamaha V-Star Classic 650 about 9 years ago. I still have the bike but don't ride it that much anymore. I started to ride about 12 years ago on a Yamaha Virago. When I moved up to the V-Star, I notice a big different in freeway rides. The bike was really stable at speed above 80 mph, unlike my Virago. Within a year, I put on like 15,000 miles on the bike. About the only thing I have to maintain was oil changes, air filter, 1 set of spark plugs, and 1 air filter. Always start up on 1st tried, even on cold mornings. I installed a new set of Bub pipes and let me tell ya, it sounds so much better than stock pipes. I could have swear it feels like I gained another 3 to 5 horse powers too. With all that being said, the bike does have a few draw back though. First, it's way under power. There're times when I couldn't accelerate fast enough to keep myself in the clear. And when you tried to hug the road a little too much, it would rub on either side of the footrest. I guess it's just too low. Other than that, I would highly recommend this bike to a beginner. It's real easy to ride and control. Most ladies will have no problem with this bike.
