Xbox 360 - Rock Band —
Trivial Pursuit used to be the ultimate party game. Used to be.
Not everyone knows the capital of Azerbaijan. Not everyone knows who won the Michigan primary in 1976. And for the love of God, not everyone can answer a question from the literature category because the questions are so obscure.
But everyone loves music, and everyone wants to be a music star.
Rock Band delivers on this basic appeal and then some. Just about anyone can pick up and play the game. No musical skill required. After you get used to it, playing with your friends and family and seeing them succeed (or fail) along side you really gives you the feeling of being in a band. You can bail them out when they're losing it, or when you're in a groove you can work together to boost your score. This "all for one, one for all" feeling you get came as something as a surprise for me, and the skeptical reader probably doubts a video game could really do this. I was skeptical, too.
Best of all is the list of songs which gets longer every single week with new releases for download. If you're comparing this game against Guitar Hero, this is an area where Rock Band blows Guitar Hero out of the water.
On the downside, a lot of people don't care for the guitar compared to the one from Guitar Hero. The strum bar is "softer", meaning you won't hear it clicking. For some people, this is an important feature. Also, it's a shame that the Rock Band guitar does not work with Guitar Hero. The Guitar Hero guitar DOES work with Rock Band, though.
The game is pricy, but keep in mind you are getting a drum set, a mic, a guitar, and the game for the bundle price. I really recommend getting the bundle even if you already have a Guitar Hero controller because this way, you will be able to have someone play bass. There's really no substitute for the fun of a four player Rock Band party. Buy it.
