Xbox 360 - BioShock —
From the mysterious beginning of the game, you are immersed in a story so deep and full of twists. The game's story puts you in the perspective of a plane crash victim in the ocean. You swim your way to a lighthouse which leads you to a submarine called a Bathosphere. Taking it down, you find yourself in giant underwater city called "Rapture". You are contacted by a man through a radio, who asks you to do favors for him in order to get you out of this place. The story deepens every step you get from here.
The graphics are very detailed, and special effects can be seen everywhere, from realistic shadows to dust particles floating in the air. The sound is brilliantly played, from the old-time 40s and 50s music to the echoing sounds of enemies around the corner. The game is directed perfectly, full of frightening scenes. Some events are scripted, others are enemies appearing out of nowhere or chasing you along the ceiling.
This game is in the first person, but plays like an RPG in a way that your character can upgrade weapons at special booths and upgrade "spells" by buying or collecting special positions.
Bioshock is touted as a "spiritual successor" of the games System Shock and System Shock 2 of the 90s, made by the same designer, Ken Levine. Looking at those games, Bioshock, other than being shinier and newer, hasn't advanced the series much. In fact, it has been said that Bioshock was "dumbed down" and made easier than the System Shocks since healing and mana replenishments are found everywhere. Many say the game is short, but it took this average gamer two weeks of playing a few hours a day to finish the game. That's good enough for me!
