If you're at all familiar with my health issue - Nesidioblastosis - then it should be of no surprise that my endocrinologist is someone who I see quite often!  During one of my visits, I was relaying to him that I was having difficulty with my energy level and most importantly - staying awake during my 1 hour + drive to and from work.  Because I need to limit the amount of caffeine I have (i.e. very little - it will make my blood sugar spike highs and then lows quickly), my options seem to be limited.  Even when I seem to get enough sleep, it just seems that I can't get and keep my energy at a decent level.

After he had me go through the typical blood tests, it appeared that my vitamin/mineral levels were fine (exception of a few that needed to be tweaked) he asked me if I had looked into any energy drinks to give me a boost.  I said that I had however, I found that they contained too much caffeine and that whole caffeine roller coaster thing wasn't for me.

He left the room momentarily and came back with a smallish can of this stuff - XS Energy Drink - Electric Lemon Blast.  He told me that he drinks one early in the afternoon and it seems to give him that added boost that he is looking for.  When I turned the can around to read the nutritional information, I was pretty amazed by what I found.

  • Vitamin A 0%
  • Calcium 0%
  • Vitamin B3 100%
  • Vitamin B6 300%
  • Vitamin C 0%
  • Iron 0%
  • Vitamin B5 100%
  • Vitamin B12 4900%

In addition, there was l-taurine, l-glutamine, ginseng, and caffeine.   XS Energy Drink has approximately 83 mg of caffeine and is comparable to a 8 oz. cup of brewed coffee.

So on one hand - I was thrilled  by the massive amounts of B's but I wondered if the amount of caffeine would send my blood sugar into a downward spiral.  I also wondered if it would have a nasty taste (or after taste) and if I had to drink it ice cold in order to tolerate it.

The verdict?  This particular flavor was delicious.  I've drank it both warm and ice cold.  In all cases, it's a "treat" I look forward to every a.m. and every late afternoon and I feel like I am not only getting what I need to stay awake, but my body is also getting an extra dose of those water-soluable vitamins.

The downside of this product?  It's not available in stores.  You have to order it through the distributor - Quixtar and a case (12 cans) will set you back about $24.00.

I love this drink!! It has the right amount of vitamins without all the sugar and carbs. It gets me to focus and study. When I'm at work 2-3pm can be the worst,I just drink one of these and I'm good to go!!!! I get mine from healthflex.com

I usually flip out when I take too much B12. I shake and get all heart racy. Oddly, caffeine (which I shouldn't have but do) doesn't do a thing - even 32 ounces of iced tea or diet Pepsi. I wish I knew if this would make me all shaky. I NEED energy so badly but the only energy drink I ever had was Red Bull and it was swill and made me shaky.
