Wreck This Journal - To Create is to Destroy —

Quick View: Everyone who knows me, knows I love journals. Blank ones, lined ones, ones with prompts, interactive ones, ones that help me to discover things about myself, diaries, you name it. I have dozens of them from little lock and key diaries to pricey leather bound ones. I recently bought Wreck This Journal and am having a heck of time following the instructions. The idea is to...wreck the journal and that goes against everything I use journals for. But it's lots of fun!

About Wreck This Journal

This black paperback journal is 192 pages of heart wrenching (for me) instructions like spill drinks on this page, scribble on another, poke holes, write one word over and over, color outside the lines (shudder), crumple a page, and so much more. The idea is to just let loose and not care what happens to the journal. Your creative side comes out, perhaps some anger issues are addressed, and you feel freer.

But I only have done two of the pages so far because I can't bear to "Wreck This Journal". I did write one word over and over again (My name. How creative!) and I did draw circles all over one page. But I haven't been able to bring myself to crumple up a page, stain one, or *gasp* bring the journal into the shower with me. I can't even do page one: Break the spine!

This journal really is a lot of fun and I will do it all. I WILL. I just have to throw away my notions of keeping every written thing protected and enjoy wrecking the journal. People who have actually done everything instructed have had a lot of fun letting loose. I have attached some photos from others since I only did two of my own pages. When I do my own, I'll replace the user pics with my own.

If you want something different for yourself or as a fun little gift for someone, Wreck This Journal is under $10.00 and can provide hours of entertainment and freeing fun. the owner can be as creative as he or she wants and, in the end, the journal will be gone, never to be seen again. That pains me to type but the idea is to let loose, do things you normally wouldn't, and then ditch the evidence. I will Wreck My Journal over the course of the summer and it will be gone by fall. IF I can bear to even break the spine of it!

My Viewpoint

Wreck This Journal is a unique, therapeutic paperback that's fun and harmless. Creativity flows, caution is thrown to the wind, and the owner can take as much time as he or she wants on each page. Some people spend loads of time on each page while others zip through the whole journal in a few days. I have a feeling I'll be one of the slow ones. I'm going to poke holes through a page when I finish this review. Ack! I give this journal 5 stars. It's unique, fun, and very different from any journal I have owned. Go on, Wreck This Journal!

I'm still only on like the fifth page. I have to just do it. It's ONLY a journal. lol.

Your review made me want one of these journals, even though I would be like you, cringing all the way. Ah, the challenge.

You would never take the time to do it. The kids would love it though. I can see them having a great time sticking their dinner to a page, spilling their drinks on another, and gluing thread, string, and random objects on another, etc.

This sounds awesome. I'm not sure why but I like it!! I want one!

...just went online and bought one for my sister. She'll love it! It was pretty inexpensive too. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yes, kind of twisted, indeed. lol. Fun but very strange.

LOL. I think anyone who writes feels that way. My husband has enjoyed doing a few pages with no hesitations. I was cringing.

It's fun in a strange way. lol. My husband did one page. He got to drop the journal on it's end from a high place. He liked that WAY too much! :)

I know. I think writers may not enjoy this journal as others would. It goes against everything we do. That's how I feel anyway. But I am playing around with it now and then. My husband did one page where he had to drop it on its end from a high place. Shudder. He enjoyed the heck out of that. lol.

In response to TunefulGal's comment from May 30, 2009 at 4:31AM:

For normal people. it probably is destressing but I covet journals and hate to wreck them. But I did do a few pages and I'm OK with it. By the end of the exercises, yes, you are supposed to ditch the journal. (weep)

TunefulGal wrote on May 30, 2009 at 4:31AM

Shouldn't this be DE-stressing? Do you have to get rid of it when you've done all of these free-ing up things and have a wonderful wreck left? (You always find such interesting things, Patty!)

nicki2442 wrote on May 28, 2009 at 8:32PM

Im going to get one as a gift.

Brittanyls wrote on May 27, 2009 at 6:00PM

That is a great idea for a journal! Hysterical!

LisaCarey wrote on May 26, 2009 at 3:35PM

I think my daughter would love it!

bkovacs wrote on May 26, 2009 at 1:54PM

I don't think I could actually wreck it, either. That's just a little too odd.

Oh this does sound fun.

Well, it does get points for originality! I couldn't wreck it though!

Fardreamer wrote on May 25, 2009 at 11:46AM

What an original, if perhaps a bit twisted, idea. Great review, Patty.

I am trying so hard to actually wreck it but it makes me nervous. lol. It is definitely going to be an empowering moment when it's completely wrecked.

this2shallpass19 wrote on May 25, 2009 at 1:48AM

This is so unique. This is a great gift for that person that has everything!
