Word World —

Word World has quickly become my 3 1/2 year old son's favorite show! And it's educational, which is a bonus!

This innovative children's program revolves around characters who are made out of letters that spell their names ("Dog," "Sheep," "Duck," "Frog," etc.) In fact, everything in Word World is constructed from letters. My son now knows how to spell the words "house," "barn," "drum," and "horn," just to name a few. I was impressed with how quickly my son picked up on this concept and was reading the words on his own, before the characters told the viewers what the words were.

For some reason, this cute little show has become the end-all, be-all for my son. Now that he's in preschool and can't watch it when it's on, I've been taping it for him and the first thing he wants to do when he gets home is to watch it. In fact, if he had his way, he'd watch all of the episodes I've saved on tape every day, over and over again!

The only complaint I have about this show is that there aren't enough new programs. PBS has rerun the same 5 or 6 shows over and over again, until even I can remember the songs and sing along with the characters as they sing, "It's time to build a word! Let's build it! Let's build it now!" But I know repetition is the key to learning at this age, and the reruns don't seem to bother my son, so I guess it's no big deal.
