In another review, I wrote about "Gift of the Month" clubs in which I mentioned Wolferman's (Wolfermans.com) whose specialty is the stuff which English teas and breakfasts are made of ... freshly baked scones, muffins, crumpets, special preserves and spreads, etc. This division of Harry and David's are especially famous for their "Signature" English muffins. Although they have started to branch out to American stuff (such as Cinnamon or Pecan rolls to die for) their real thing is still the best of what you can expect when you attend an English-style tea.
Although I haven't signed up for either the "Breakfast of the Month" or the "Muffin of the Month" club, I did break down and order a dozen scones which I have shared with someone else. We each got one scone in each of these flavors: Cinnamon, Apple Cranberry, Cranberry Orange, Chocolate Chunk, Blueberry and Classic Current. These scones were individually wrapped and sealed and admittedly did not look promising at first, seeming to me to be quite hard and dry. Certainly, they did not look worth the approximately $30 the dozen had cost. However, my first impression was wrong and my faith has been rewarded.
I opened one end of the Apple Cranberry wrapper and heated it in the microwave for about 15 seconds. What a treat! As I stood there by my microwave, a mug of coffee beside me and eating away with gusto, I could finally see what all the fuss is about where scones are concerned. Although I would quite prefer never to know the nutritional stats for these things, I can guess that it is a humdinger and makes these not something I might want to eat every day. You can just taste the glorious cream, butter, and fine flour in every bite and for a special treat now and then, these scones are worth the money.
MY VIEWPOINT:
Time is running out now for this Christmas shopping season but it might not be bad to keep this in mind for future holidays, birthdays or other special occasions. For the English Romance fan in your life, the delicious baked wares from Wolferman's would be a great base for a Jane Austen Gift Basket. Just load a bunch of individually wrapped scones, muffins, crumpets, and other traditional tea items (plus some fancy teas, of course!) into a roomy but sturdy basket (one of those English picnic hampers would be great) along with your Romantic's favorite Jane Austen novel or DVD. Perhaps add a fancy china teapot with matching cups and a small bouquet of roses from the supermarket. If you've had a really good year and can afford something really spectacular ... and are doing this for a really special person ... throw in a couple plane tickets for London, so that you guys can see for yourselves what a real English tea is like.
