If you love to play Scrabble with friends as much as I do, you've probably noticed that if you play with at least three other people, you barely get into the hilarity and momentum of the game before you begin running out of tiles and spaces on the board.  YIKES!  Now, a hero has come to our rescue -- Winning Moves Games who have invented Super Scrabble.

Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun

Essentially, this is the same Scrabble we know and love, just bigger.  The board is 21 x 21 inches or 441 squares (as opposed to 15 x 15 inches or 225 squares for the regular game) with more premium squares (including quadruple letter and word scores) and twice as many (200) tiles.  Thanks to the wonders of Super Scrabble, we now have two each 10-point "Q" and "Z" tiles.  At last, players can create words like "fuzzy", "buzz" and "jazz" without employing the use of a precious blank tile.

Super Scrabble comes in two versions, with prices ranging from $20 something for Standard up to more than $35 for Deluxe (with raised grid board to prevent tiles sliding around and other amenities).

A WORD OF WARNING:

I gave Super Scrabble to my favorite Scrabble family a few years ago for Christmas (an occasion which we usually wind up with a brisk round of play).  Having actually played this, I can truthfully say that I loved this whopper edition of Scrabble but must warn everyone that this super-sized version has a LOT of extra play.  Begin a game of Super Scrabble late at night and you might just as well make up that cot in the extra bedroom for overnight guests.

Also, Super Scrabble is really a game for serious players not for that kind of dear, well-meaning person who spends the entire game chatting garrulously, snacking, or petting the family dog, and not noticing the board at all until her turn comes up and she freezes, stricken with indecision for ten or fifteen minutes at a time.  If she's a good friend and you don't want to leave her out, stick to the ordinary Scrabble game or you guys may never get to bed at all.

I would guess that Anagrams is probably one of the oldest games. I really suck at it too!

I love interesting histories. Anagrams has a very old one (sorry, maybe you've already looked into it). The mother of them all, I think!

Oh oh, ANAGRAMS! I am no good at them, I suspect because they just don't appeal to me, which Scrabble does. I'm writing an article about classic board games for AC now and Scrabble has a very interesting history.

Take care!

Great game and review - I didn't know there was a super one:)

Do you think our gang is ready for Super Scrabble? (Amity and I played on Saturday and she simply WHOMPED me. We also tried a long round of the old Anagrams. She suggested we not play this with the other Scrabblers. It would take an eternity -- especially with the talking going on. Anyway, Super Scrabble sounds challenging and fun!

I LOVE scrabble and even play it online at Pogo. This sounds great and I think I should add it to my Christmas list :)
