Windows Vista from Microsoft Inc.
A lot of people have told me a lot of bad things about this operating system, and now I've been using this since August 2009. I did use XP x64 before this.
The operating system does use up a bit more RAM/Memory, but on the brighter side, it has improved my games performance by up to 70% or more!
The DirectX 10 that comes with Vista has saved me a lot of time trying to find ways of reducing the quality of my games to make them run better, and now I do not need to.
With a little bit of reading, you can get rid of the widgets and other stuff that does slow Vista down... some.
I recommend this to anyone who has a x64 bit Architecture, and a decent amount of RAM
I have 3 GB of RAM in this, and VIsta runs without any problems. Some older applications may not work with x64 bit, so if you like a lot of your stuff that may be inflicted with this, you can use the x86 (32 Bit) Windows Vista.
Where to gain knowledge to tweak up Vista?: Head on over to YouTube.com cause a lot of people make "How To" video's right there step by step on how to tweak and modify your windows without causing harm to your OS.
(If you're not sure or don't really know how to tweak software, it is best to not do it, cause if you do something wrong, you'll screw your operating system up and may cause failure to boot up period!)
To put it this way: The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion used to run at 17 FPS (Frames Per Second) and now it stay at 60 FPS at full res!!! that is a big difference from XP to Vista!!!
But soon, WIndows 7 will be out, so I may change to that, so hold on to your money, and wait!!!
The difference between XP and VIsta are not by much, Vista is slightly different, but one uses DX9 and Vista uses DX10. DX10 does help with games, if you're a big gamer such as myself, it's worth it.
