A Must-Have For Custom Color Creations

If you like to make your own frosting and icing then chances are you have tried tints and coloring products. Wilton has a massive series of icing colors that you can use to create your own unique shades; they are mixable so if you want something darker or lighter you always have options to add other colors to the icing or frosting. They sell almost all of the colors individually in plastic containers but if you are looking for a specific color series they also have pre-packaged sets that you can get. There are seasonal ones like red and green for Christmas as well as pastels for Easter. The character inspired icing color sets have great eye-popping shades that you can use on cakes. Some of the most popular were Strawberry Shortcake (red, yellow, pink and green) and Batman (black, red, green and purple). The three and four colored sets are great to catch on sale because if you make your own icing you know that they are something that you'll always be able to use. When it comes to tinting or coloring icing, especially with the Wilton products, you need to start with a small amount because it is highly concentrated. You can always add more color to it if you want it darker or to have a stronger tone to it. Unless you have extra plain icing or frosting on hand, it is impossible to soften a color if you add too much. I usually break my icing down in to four containers so I always have extra plain non-colored icing on hand in case I need to lighten a little bit of what I have colored. I use a flat-end toothpick to add the coloring to the icing then mix gently. A little goes a long way but if you are trying to make black icing or frosting you are going to have to add a lot of it to white icing; more than a few times I ended up with a dark or slate gray color and had to go back and add more black to it. Wilton also sells pre-made colored icing if you are having trouble creating a certain shade. Design Not applicable to product. Doesn't Stick Not applicable to product.

Makes my cakes great!

I like to do a lot of at home baking and I love making different kinds of cakes and desserts with colored icings. One of the best icings that I use is Wilton icing color. I drive 40 minutes out of the way to go to Hobby Lobby every few months to stock up on Wilton icing. I love that it comes in a variety of colors even light and dark colors! They always have the exact color that I am looking for. It mixes into icing easily and evenly and the measuring instructions are easy to follow but make sure to dye according to instructions so the color isn't off! Wilton also does not corrupt the flavor of the icing, my desserts always turn out delicious and they look great with this icing. The only negative I would say about Wilton icing is that it is really potent. Be careful or it will stain your hands or clothes easily. But the colors are so desirable that it's worth that risk. Overall, I would highly recommend Wilton for dying icing. It's very versatile for baking all kinds of desserts!

Wilton has so many different colors of food coloring to choose from. These food coloring gels work great when you want to tint the icing to any color you desire. You can even go on Wilton's website to find out how much of each color to use to make a desired color. These are the consistency of gel instead of the traditional liquid. I don't particular like to work with the gel as much because I have to somehow scrape the gel out of the jar as opposed to just squeezing drops out. A toothpick works fine but it can get messy if you are not careful. These gels last forever too. There is so much in one jar that if you are a casual baker, it will take you years to finish one jar of it unless you are trying to make a darker color. I have found one negative. I tried to make a cake with black icing one time and could not get it to turn black. I used almost a whole jar of the black coloring. This left the icing tasting terrible. Whenever I try to make a darker color like black or maroon, using too much of the coloring makes the icing bitter and terrible. But if you are only using a little bit of it, it works fine and you never taste it. Overall, it is average but I still prefer liquid drops. Performance It does the job as long as you do not have to make dark colors. Ease of Cleaning It stains everything it touches. Durability It lasts a long time and doesn't fade on the cake. Design The taste is what I cannot get past.

Good way to color icing for decorating cakes

4

I recently started baking a lot of desserts for work events, so I bought Wilton Icing Color as a way to color the icing to make nicer looking desserts. The icing colors I bough came in a pack of about eight different colors. These are gel colors, so it's a little difficult to get the color out of the container. I normally use a toothpick or end of a plastic utensil to get the coloring out of the container. I only need to mix a small amount of the icing color with the icing in order to get a really nice color. Another reason I like this icing color is because it does not taste like chemicals after you make your icing. They do not change the taste of any of the food items you put the icing color in. Also, they don't have a bad scent or change the scent of the food you're baking. These icing colors are easy to find at any cake decorating specialty store or crafting store like AC Moore. They are relatively inexpensive, and the icing colors seem to last forever. I had mine a pretty long time, and they have not gone bad. Performance These always make the colors of my icing vibrant and identical to the color on the container.

Beautiful colors!

I just started using Wilton icing color for my frosting. So far, I really like it. It gives bright, vibrant colors, and adding the color does not change the taste or texture of the icing at all. I'm still getting used to figuring out how much color I need to add, and it does seem to take a little more than I expect, but that could be because I'm new to cake decorating and I don't know what's normal yet. It would be nice if there was an easier way to add the color to the icing - putting the color in a squeeze bottle would be about the only thing I can think of to improve this product. As it is, I have to dip in a toothpick and then swirl that around in the frosting, which wastes a lot of toothpicks. That's not a big problem, though, and the colors I get are beautiful. I also love the range of colors available - several different shades of most colors, and black and brown are also included. I'm sure I will continue to buy this product once I run out of the colors I have. Ease of Cleaning I got some on my fingers, and thought I was just going to have colorful fingers for a while, but it washed off well. Doesn't Stick I don't know what this rating category means.

When does it end?!

My mother used the Wilton Icing Colors growing up, so I always expected food coloring to be of similar quality. However, when I moved out I bought some other food coloring jars that were only slightly cheaper as a way of cutting costs. From the first time I used the other coloring, I could notice the difference. So, the next day I went out and purchased the Wilton Icing Colors. The hues are more vibrant, and a little bit of coloring goes a long way. While these tubes are a little pricey, they do last a very long time. I have had no issue getting the color I want, without losing the texture of the icing or fondant. I would highly recommend the Wilton Icing Colors to anyone I know. The one downside to using this strong coloring agent is that it is a pain to clean up, because the color is so concentrated and it will stain clothing. Other than that the Wilton Icing Colors are great and the color always blends in so nicely.

Love WILTON ICING COLORS!!

I always use Wilton Icing Colors for the custom desserts that I make. I make everything from birthday cakes to wedding cakes. They are readily available for sale at craft stores and at Walmart. They come in a wide range of colors. They are reasonably priced. They come in gel form in small containers. I usually use a toothpick to get the icing gel out of the container. You can customize the depth and vibrancy of the color you desire by the amount of gel that you add. I did not rate the Wilton Icing Colors a "10", because there are a couple of drawbacks. I have discovered over the years that you have to be careful of how you store them. If they are exposed to heat or very cold temperatures, the containers can leak around the lid. That has happened to me with the yellow, green, red, and brown icing colors. The black icing gel is not true to form if you try to mix it into a white frosting. it is better to start off with a darker frosting like chocolate in order to achieve the black color. Also, the black gel stains everything hot pink, including your tongue. You have to clean everything immediately in order to get the coloring out of plastic bowls or pastry bags. This is my favorite brand of icing gels. Performance The only color I have had a problem with achieving the true color is black. Ease of Cleaning You have to clean evrything that is made of plastic immediately or it will stain. Black gel turns pastry bags, plastic bowls and tongues hot pink! Durability It produces gorgeous, vibrant colors Design They are high quality gels and using them is fairly easy. I use toothpicks to get the thick gels out of the small containers. Doesn't Stick The color is readily absorbed into the icing.

Wilton icing color is a good alternative to drops for deep color

4

I was given Wilton icing drops as a gift and I use them interchangeably with the regular drops. The drops are definitely easier to use, but the Wilton icing gel definitely has the ability to make deeper more intense color if that is what you are looking for. It kind of grossed me out at first because it is kind of a weird looking gel and you have to scoop out the amount you need, but it does dissolve well into the icing or whatever you are using it for. You don't need much, so a little container will last quite a while, possibly longer than the drops. Watch out though, because if you were to spill any of the gel onto a counter or towel or anything, it will stain. I learned this lesson the hard way when i put the little measuring spoon i was using to scoop it out onto the counter. It eventually wore off, but it took many weeks to get the color off the counter. There is no magic formula, just add gel little bits at a time until you get the color you need. I would recommend giving it a try.

Not As Easy As Liquid Drops, But Better Color

4

I don't do professional cakes, but I enjoy making extra special cakes for friends and loved ones on their birthdays or special occasions. I don't fool with fondant; mainly I use a butter cream or a caramel icing for my cakes. I had always used liquid food coloring, but the colors can be harsh, and without a lot of practice it is sometimes hard to get the desired color. Then I tried all natural food coloring, because I didn't want the "red dye # blah blah" in my food, but the brand I tried failed horribly to produce a decent color, and was crazy expensive. So I broke down and bought a mixed carton of colors - red, blue, yellow, and brown. I wasn't sure about the brown at first, but it works well to dull out colors that are too bright or harsh. Otherwise, if I want brown icing, it's chocolate! The gel is way messier than being able to drop some drops of liquid into the icing. I use a toothpick, and it usually takes multiple dips to get the desired color. Then there is gel left on the toothpick and it can get color everywhere if you are not careful. I haven't stained anything yet. It would be nice if they could make these in some kind of squeeze package instead of jars.

works well

I recently tried Wilton Icing Color when I decided to bake my daughter's birthday cake and decorate it myself when she turned four. My daughter wanted a Strawberry Shortcake theme. So I saw this coloring and decided to try it. Well, it worked well, I got the desired colors I wanted in my icings. I also got those colors all over my fingers, hands and apron because this stuff stains badly. My daughter thought it was funny to see Mommy with pink and green hands. I didn't find it quite so amusing. It would not wash off, so I had to let it wear off. While this coloring is not extremely expensive, it is not inexpensive either. I plan to just stick with regular food colorings in the future. But as I said, Wilton's coloring did work beautifully. And it is available in a wide variety of colors. It mixes in to your icing nicely as well. It is just difficult to get it out of the bottle and into your bowl without getting it all over your hands. And it also stained our mouths a little when we ate the cake (but it didn't stay long). As a result, I really can't recommend this product.
