I encountered this bird feeder through my girlfriend. She has had one since before we started dating. The great thing about this bird feeder is that it really does keep the squirrels out of the food. When she told me it was squirrel proof, I didn't believe her, but now that I've seen it in action I'm a convert.
The feeder uses a 9v battery to shock squirrels that get on the feeder, but birds don't get shocked. Do not be concerned about the squirrels, though. I have felt the shock, and it's just not that bad. In case you don't trust me, it has the ASPCA seal of approval, as well.
When I first saw my girlfriend's feeder, it was not working because of a problem that the manufacturer has fixed on newer models. Once I got it fixed, it seemed that every squirrel in the county took a pass it at it in the first two days, but they all learned and it hasn't felt the touch of a squirrel in a long time. They DO check it from time to time, so if the battery goes dead your feeder could take some damage if you don't replace it promptly. (The top of mine has some chew marks.) The newer models have a battery indicator, so you should not have this problem.
One warning, though. Make sure that you turn it off before refilling it. (See note above about having felt the shock myself. It doesn't hurt, but it is startling.)
Wild Bill's makes an 8-port model (which holds 10# of seed)and a 12-port model (which holds 12#)
