I read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, this past summer. It is a very interesting and original book. It takes a look at the whole Wizard of Oz, Dorothy situation from the side of the witch herself, Elphaba. It explores her childhood and her time at college. It takes a look...

I have know about the whole Wicked Broadway show thing for years now, but I never felt any inclination to see it or know more about it... until last week.  Our local library annex is smaller than my shed, so when I saw Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West on the shelves, I decided...

My daughter gave me this book for Christmas and said I would love it. After I finished it I asked her if she had actually read it and she just laughed and said no - that the person at the book store said it was good. It is long and drawn out - it seems to skip around and it's kind of hard to follow - probably because I just wasn't in to it. I have since seen the musical - someone gave me a ticket because I sure wasn't going to pay for it after the book and I absolutely love it! Much better on stage and not hard to follow at all. Whoever did the re-write for stage did a great job!

Fairy tales are easy stories that can be told and retold by many generations. But "Wicked" illustrates the point that the stories we know are always written by history's winners. Written from the point of view of Elphaba, the book follows her life from her birth into a dysfunctional family, through her adolesence as a social outcast and into her adulthood as someone speaking out against the political injustices she sees.

This tells more of the background, painting a realistic picture of a society in turmoil rather than a colorful children's fairytale. I am a huge fan of "The Wizard of Oz" and as...

When I first found this book, I was very excited because I had heard so much about the play and have always been a fan of the Wizard of Oz movie and books.  I was not sure what to expect from the book but was most pleasantly surprised.

It tells the "witch's" story in such a way as to give you a whole new idea on what life was really like for her.  There are some difficult words to pronounce but you have to remember this is a story from a different realm than ours so things won't be as easy as we feel they should.

Any one who enjoys reading and learning more about people should like this...

Gregory McGuire spins a tale of the wizard of oz from a view no one really ever took before.  He spun it from what the wicked witch of the west was experiencing, feeling, and how she was making her decisions.  This was an exciting book that I couldn't put down once I started reading.  I have since recommended it to several friends and both of my sisters.  I also recommended it to a former professor who liked it so much he purchased the book himself after I lent it to him.  McGuire paints a vivid, detailed picture into a world different than you could imagine, offering an inspirational look... read full review »

Wicked delves into the history of the Wizard of Oz with such detail. It paints pictures that will forever change your opinion of the original story.  It gives history on the characters.  It also answers a lot of questions that you wouldn't even think to ask, such as why the witches didn't get along. This is one of those books that you just cannot put down.

I was so looking forward to reading this book.. then I started it.  I couldn't believe how political and based in religion this book was.  It really took me some time to get interested in this whole new world- but now I'm hooked.  Not only did I finish this one, I'm onto it's sequel- Son of a Witch.  A great story about the underdog.

I believe this is one of the worst books I've ever read.  It is very long, wanders around endlessly and it is mean spirited.  Elphaba is condemned by the way she looks.  Yes, I know we all are, but couldn't she catch a break somewhere?  I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Amazingly written. It gives every villain hope and sheds a new light on the classics and how we perceived them.
