I have a lot of friends who don't go to college. In fact in one close group of friends I am the only student of the bunch. I'm not smarter than they are, so far I haven't received and great life opportunities resulting directly from my enrollment, and because I pay for school and only have time for a part time job, I am poorer than they are. But I love college and believe it is the best thing for me.
Why? Because I know how to think. College teaches me to responsibly take information in from a variety of sources, to be barraged by information, in reality. It teaches me to sort out information in my head, to discern fact from opinion (harder than it sounds, mind you), and to detect bias. It teaches me to develop my own syntheses and apply them with confidence.
As added bonuses, yeah, I know lots of stuff, meet amazing people, have access to mentors, and receive an all around great quality of life. I love it, and despite the inherent hardships, you would too.
