Whole Foods - Austin, TX —

I am a avid Whole Foods store shopper! I actually get exited about grocery shopping at Whole Foods, and that says a lot for me , because grocery shopping in regular super markets is a real chore for me . I am  very health conscious and very strict about reading labels for the ingredients content. I look for all natural, organic, and trans fat free, and sugar free, artificial free ingredients. It is difficult for me to find much of any of the foods my husband and I eat at regular super markets.
My diet and my husbands diet consists mostly of raw fruits and vegetables, raw nuts, lentils, some soy, and some fish, and whole grains. We avoid sugar, white flour, processed foods and harmfull fats, and fried foods, and artificial sweetners. Most everything on the super market shelves are highly processed, laden with sugar and fats, and excessive sodium and artificial coloring and sweetners, corn starch, corn sweetners, MSG, Nitrates, the list goes on for harmfull ingredients that are in food products.
Some super markets do offer a small section of their store to be supplied with a small selection of healthy foods, and some offer organic produce, the variety and quality usually aren't  very good.  But Whole Foods has it all. The variety of organic foods and produce is superb!  My husband and I don't eat meat or poultry, we do eat wild caught fish, and Whole Foods has a wonderfull assortment of fresh fish to choose from. I think the seafood is a bit more expensive than super market prices, but  I prefer quality wild caught rather than farm raised fish. Farm raised fish has been fed antibiotics and growth haromnes, substances that can effect human health. We also only eat free range brown eggs that have not been fed antibiotics or growth harmones. I can find all of these items at Whole Foods.
I have to visit at least three supermarkets to find only a fraction of the items on my grocery list. But I usually find all my special items at Whole foods. We use Agave as our sweetner and Whole Foods is the only store in our area that carries the brand we prefer.
We travel a great deal, and I am so pleased when we find a Whole Foods in the cities we visit. We always keep fresh fruits and vegie snacks available in our hotel room frig. And we travel with our favorite protein powder.  And when we get low on our protein powder, we really appreciate it when we find a Whole Foods store in the city we visit so we can restock. We have a diificult time finding the brands we use, at other stores.
My favorite Whole Foods store is in Boca Raton Florida. We were there in October 2007. We were staying in Boynton Beach, and could only find a couple of small health food stores, so we asked the cashier at one, if there was a Whole Foods in the area, she immediately started raving about the huge new Whole Foods store in Boca Raton. She said it was about a twenty five minute drive from where we were, but it was worth the drive. Well, to us the drive was not an issue to begin with, because we were traveling and wanted to take advantage of a Whole Foods being nearby. But, were we ever in for a delightfull surprise! It was the largest we had ever visited, and the vast assortment of products offered was amazing! We went back three times, and the last time before we left Florida, so we could stock up on items we don't get in our area. It was an incredible store, loved it! There was two area's set up with buffets, one was all kosher foods, the other was three  massive display's  of food. We have never experienced any grocery store with such a vast assortment of items to choose from, its simply an amazing grocery store. Even the eating section was huge!  I highly recommend visiting it for anyone going to visit in the Boca Raton area.
Whole Foods is our favorite store, we have three in our general area. We drive twenty miniutes to get to the one closest to us, but it is well worth the drive. I would love to see a Whole Foods in every city in America, that way, I can be assured when I travel, I will be able to find the quality all natural and organic products I am able to get in my area.

In response to LadyMagic's comment from May 28, 2008 at 11:01PM:

Hello LadyMagic
No poultry, I do eat free range eggs that are antibiotic free. I was totally vegan for awhile; but it was difficult because there are hidden traces of animal protein in even health foods. I travel a lot , and restaurants always seem to add something that interferes with a total vegan diet. I have also added wild caught cold water fish to my diet for added protein. Only wild though, because farm raised fish has been fed animal bi products and antibiotics and steroids to speed up the growth process. Also, a friend of mine is a Dr. that practices at the cellular level of the human body, and he suggested the free range eggs for protein. If you do decide to go vegan, do your research carefully, because you will need to supplement to replace what you will miss by not eating animal protein. Thanks for the comment. Have a great day!

Really good review. Thanks. Do you ever eat poultry? From time to time I was a vegetarian but never completely vegan I'm hoping we start eating even more healthy very soon - and stick with it!

Oh, you got 'em in Houston, Bryan. I used to be a regular at their store on Westheimer at Wilcrest...worth knowing for you because they often have unusual beers that even Specs doesn't stock at all their stores (that's where I got my stockpile of English-brewed lambics).

I don't think we have these here in Houston, but it certainly sounds like a good grocery store.

I really like the fact that the quality is great and the prices are reasonable.
