Whirlpool - Kenmore Calypso Washer Review Summary

One expensive washer that most feel is overpriced is the Whirlpool Kenmore Calypso Washer. This washer offers a large capacity and the durability of the Whirlpool name, but reviewers feel it’s an overrated appliance that costs far more than it’s worth. “Whirlpool Kenmore Calypso Washer is One of the Best”, brags one reviewer, but others make comments like “Do Not Buy- Does Not Clean Well and Almost No One Can Repair” and “Leaves Strange Stains and Smelly Clothes”. Sour smelling clothes and the problem with the agitator pulling threads out of clothing are among the many reasons why reviewers recommend against owning this Washing Machine. It may carry the whirlpool name, but this appliance does not live up to Whirlpool standards in the minds of reviewers.

I have had this machine for just over three years.  We searched Consumer Reports before buying it.  It has only broke down once, but it leaves the clothes smelling dirty and it pulls the threads out of towels.  This is because it uses a disk instead of an agitator, and as the seal moves up the drum...

I am very disappointed in the Calypso action of this Whirlpool washer.  It has ruined all my towels.  I was hoping to find a solution for it here such as an adjustment but I have not found one.

I won't be purchasing any other washer with this type of agitation.  If it wasn't for that I would be satisfied.

This is the Readers Digest condensed version of what I have gone through since we purchased a Whirlpool Calypso Washer in 2001. We have had it repaired 10 times since we bought it. All I can tell you is thank goodness my husband insisted I get the extended warranty.  It's just a complete shame that you have to have that warranty to keep the darn thing running. What happened to the days of buying something that was suppose to be quality and having it last for years?

The Sears Customer Service people are not understanding when you call in for service and One Source is a complete joke. You...

I purchased the Whirlpool Calipso about a year ago and have to say that I am not really satisfied with the job it does cleaning my clothes.  While I can wash larger loads due to not having the conventional agitator, which was my initial draw, I'm finding that large loads don't come out as clean.  I have the dryer as well with the moisture sensor.  My clothes take a long time to dry.  My next washer will be a front loader.

We bought this Calypso washer because it didn't have the agitator and could wash large loads and big blankets. It started out good, then I started noticing my whites having funny stains on them. It has ruined more white shirts then I can count. My kids won't even buy white clothes any more knowing the machine will ruin them.  It also has that musty smell from the water that doesn't drain out of the holding tub in the bottom of the washer. I did find that if you add bleach to any load possible it helps with the smell.  I also have the calypso dryer and I do like it. I had a repairman out to fix... review »

We bought our new Kenmore Elite Calypso in July of 2005.  We have 6 people in our house but two sets of machines to this machine has had the load of three prople during that time.  Last year it stopped draining so after some diagnosis, I replace the drain pump and that resolved the problem.  Now it won't drain again.  The drum seems to have dropped nearly an inch in the housing to it splashed water around its insides.  Additionally it makes a squeaking noise as the drum shifts around.

We have an older Kenmore that is twice as old that is running great without any problems.

We bought the Whirlpool Calypso Clothes Washer and dryer brand new and spent around $2500 for the pair to replace a 17 year old Kenmore basic washer and dryer set that was still working fine when we sold those along with our old house.   Looking back with hindsight,  we should have kept the old set.

Almost immediately we noticed problems with the Calypso not cleaning the clothes adequately.  Even worse, the washer would leave black mold stains on our clothes!!!

The repairman who visited our house said he saw lots of problems with these machines and recommended using a special cleaner every...

This is the worst washing machine on the market, Do not be fooled by the large capacity. Who cares if you can wash a comforter if it smells bad afterwards. There is something wrong with the design of this machine. DO NOT BUY IT. Your clothes will stink regardless of the high efficiency detergant you use. I've tried everything and nothing works.

I'd give it no stars if I could.

I am not the first to own my Kenmore elite calypso washer. A family friend got a new washer and dryer and gave me theirs. I love that the agitator doesn't come 3/4 of the way up to the top. I always had the hardest time getting my huge comforter to wrap around the agitator in my old washer. This washer is great for bulky item. I washed a shag runner rug yester day and was worried about it pulling the twills out but did not find a single one in the washer or any loose on the rug after washing it. I have never before been able to get my boyfriend's hevily soiled socks or his work shirts so... review »

We bought the Kenmore Calypso machine after reading Consumer Reports.  It was at the top of the list. Obviously they didn't test it for long.  Within a year it got a smell that we can't get rid of.   I can't stand this machine.  My towels get distroyed.  My clothes look dingy.  The laundry room smells sour.  When I wash bulk items they get clumps of lint all over them.  I had a repair man come out to look at it but to no avail.  He just sold me a product that was suppose to get rid of the smell.  Needless to say, it didn't.  This machine is a lemon!!!!  Don't buy it.... Something... review »

We have had this washer for only 3 or 4 years.  It has had the water pump replaced twice, and they are coming out tomorrow to probably replace it again.  I'm glad we bought the extended service plan, we have needed it.
I thought I had just bought poor quality towels until I read some of the other reviews about this machine pulling threads. Same problem here.  We have not had the problem of smelly clothes, but we do get bleach stains on loads that have no bleach in them even though I am extremely careful when adding bleach.
I hate to spend the money but I am already looking for a new machine. ...

I love the fact that the Whirlpool-Kenmore Calypso Washer can wash my clothes so much faster.  We have a small hobby farm and my husband and son can get pretty dirty outside.  I love gardening so I contribute also!  I can put all of our dirty jeans in one load a week!  It's big and tough enough to clean all the clothes so well, but it has enough settings to wash the new cashmere sweater my son got for Christmas with the delicacy that it needs.  I like the fact that I can wash the majority of my wash in cold water and it still comes out clean, but when I need a different setting for certain... review »

DOES EVERYTHING I NEED IT TO DO, INCLUDING BLANKETS AND LGE BEACH TOWEL LOADS. IS NOT TOO NOISY AND IS ENERGY EFFICIENT. LOOKING SINCE MY BILL WENT DOWN AFTER WE BOUGHT THIS. AT MY GAS AND ELECTRIC BILL, IT SEEMS TO BE ENERGY EFFICIENT. WORKS EQUALLY WELL WITH DELICATES AND TOWELS OR BLANKETS.
