Whirley Pop Popcorn Popper —

I must admit I was a bit skeptical when I first took it out of the box because I was expecting a heavy pot rather than super-thin aluminum. But once I tried it and found the right heat setting (on my stove: #7 - med-high) all concerns vanished. Plus - it was just as fast as the nasty microwave bags!

A couple of key things to keep in mind:

1. Do not use high heat. Seriously! This isn't grandma's 12lb. stock pot - the aluminum is intentionally thin to allow for quick, even heating and dispersion.

2. Because the aluminium is thin, add your ingredients BEFORE you turn on the heat and start cranking as soon as you do. It generally takes about 2 mins. until the corn starts popping and then only another minute or so to pop all of it. (You need to take it off the heat a little early if you love a few 1/2 popped kernels at the bottom like I do!)

3. Allow yourself a couple of batches to get the oil to corn ratio right. (2tsp of oil to 1/2 cup of good quality small kernel corn, 2 1/2-3 tsp. of oil to 1/2 cup of good quality large kernel corn - but I like mine as oil free as possible).

4. Always use fresh corn - and keep your corn fresh by keeping it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place (meaning most cupboards that aren't over the stove). The corn doesn't need to be "gourmet" but it does need to be fresh. Hulless helps too!

5. That said, once you get yours figured out, indulge in some gourmet corns and figure out what you like best - the bold, nutty taste of blue corn, the mellow, sweet taste of yellow corn, the rich, full taste of red corn... yeah - I know. I love popcorn!!!
