I'm currently reading the series for the second time.  Though Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is found in the SciFi/Fantasy section of most bookstores, the novels include some of everything, from adventure to fantasy to romance.  Jordan writes so that you see what the characters see, though when it gets gory, he gives bare details, though they are still a bit much for those with weak stomachs.  There are times that the series runs slow, the rest makes up for it in full; there are battles, plots, death, birth, insanity, and mystery.  Personally, I am not a fan of any book that focuses any part on the romance between two or more characters, but in these novels, it is acceptable, as without it, many important characters would be lost halfway through the series, and many event swould not occur.
