About four years ago my wife and I wanted to upgrade our run of the mill king size mattress so we went to our local mattress store and ended up buying a pillow top Sterns and Foster.  At the time I was having back  issues and I really wanted something that was going to help.  I got mixed advice about firm vs pillow top so decided to look around for myself.

One close friend highly recommended the Kingdown Mattress which is known for their very soft pillow tops.  He claimed that it helped his back problems and he liked sinking into it every night.  However, I could not find a local store and did not want to buy completely sight unseen, so we did not go in this direction. http://www.kingsdown.com/

We also went to our local Relax The Back Store and tried the Tempur Pedic.  They had a money back guarantee, so we tried it out for a week or so.  Both of us hated it.  It was too firm and not comfortable.  I know some people swear by it, but it was not for us.

I visited the local Duxiana store and tried out their super high end mattresses.  These start at $5,000 and go up, so this would have been a major investment.  The mattresses were comfortable enough, but the staff was so snobby and my wife thought I was crazy so I let it go.

So ultimately we bought the Sterns & Foster and within just a few months it developed these horrible peaks and valleys and just got worse and worse.  You could have rolled a bolder from one side of the bed to the other.   It was the bain of my existence. I became obsessed with mattresses. Every time I went to a hotel I would take off the sheets to see who made them.

But then inspiration struck!  I loved the "Heavenly Bed"  at The W hotels and found a site online and ordered one.   I think it was one of the better decisions I have ever made.  We have had the W Heavenly Bed for the last year.   It is very comfortable and has been quite durable.   I highly recommend it.  It is just right.  Not too soft, not too hard.

And at least compared to the super premium mattresses, its $1700 price is a steal.

8/15/08 - Update: This is my most frequently read review so I have come back to update just to tell you that we continue to be very happy with the Westin Heavenly Bed Mattress.  I continue to highly recommend it!

Thanks Matt. Now for the next question - did you buy the W bed that has the plush top or the pillow top? http://www.whotelsthestore.com/item.asp?curr_item_id=5

Can you tell we are getting serious about buying a new mattress? Thanks so much for your help!

It is the W bed that this review is based on. Looking back at my review, it appears that I confused the matter by putting the Westin Mattress as the product title despite the fact that it is the W Mattress that I reviewed. Sorry about that.

The W and the Westin have 2 different beds, both by the same manufacturer. Did this reviewer buy the bed from the Westin site or the W site.

This positive review was written in 2007, It is now September 2009. What is your opinion now, please? Would you write a new review, please. Also, do you know how often Westin replaces their mattresses?

So... another year has passed since your last update and I am curious to know if you're still happy with your W Heavenly Bed? We are seriously considering this bed, but it's hard to find a review from anyone who has had one for any length of time.

I purchased the Westin Heavenly Bed. I believe we bought it from 1-800-Mattress. It has a slight pillow top.

Hi, The W Mattress and Westin Heavenly bed appear to be 2 different beds. First, which one did you purchase? Did you purchase it from the W hotel store or the Westin Heavenly Bed store? There is a big difference in my opinion after reading many reviews. Also, did yours come with the pillow top or without? The W bed offers a choice....

I appreciate your review but I would like the specifics...very difficult decision since we already know what the Heavenly Bed is like.

Thanks!

Awesome. I am trying to find a new bed. Will have to go to our local Westin and try it out!

I can not tell you how much of a nightmare it has been trying to find a good mattress. Hubby & I have slept @ many hotels and the Westin...well we had the most comfortable night sleep that we could remember! We are considering this mattress but have some concern about the pillowtop. We have one now and it is lumpy. It took about 3 years for that to happen..but it is awful. Thanks for your thoughts on the Heavenly Bed!

We still have the mattress and continue to be very happy with it. Our previous mattress which was more expensive cratered in the middle. This one has remained in perfect shape. If we were to buy a new mattress, I would not hesitate to buy the Simmons Westin Heavenly Mattress. - thanks for asking. It is nice to know our review is helpful
