Following Hurricane Wilma back in October, 2005 the Xenos were in the market for a new bed.  The Hurricane had blown out our bedroom windows and for the next 4 1/2 hours I stood with our king-sized mattress pressed into the empty window frame keeping the storm out of the house.  Needless to say, the mattress was ruined.

Out came our Aero Bed and our search for a permanent replacement began.  Now truthfully our king mattress had gotten a little long in the tooth so the thought of replacing it was appealing.  The thought of replacing it with our insurance company’s money was even more appealing.

The Search

After a thorough and bewildering internet study of mattresses we headed over to City Mattress in Boca Raton. We had now read so many reviews of mattresses, our brains were on temporary overload.  I have at times been known to over-research a purchase.  It was now time for a field trip. So, over the next several hours we tried out just about every king-sized bed in the showroom.  Conclusion? In the store all new beds feel great! Have you ever noticed that? So we left the store, probably more confused than when we had entered.

That evening, while speaking with my newly married daughter on the phone, I recounted the experience. And, that’s when she introduced me to The Westin Heavenly Bed by Simmons. She and my son-in-law had purchased one just a couple of months earlier. “You know dad, it’s the bed they have in all the Westin Hotels.” My brain began to clear. Of course! Veronica and I had stayed at Westin Hotels several times and in fact had always commented on just how comfortable we found their beds. Suddenly this purchase decision seemed like it was going to be a whole lot simpler than it was only hours before.

The Westin Heavenly Bed by Simmons

According to company lore, The Heavenly Bed was conceived by Barry S. Sternlicht, former Chairman and CEO of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., and modeled after his bed at home in Connecticut. True story?  Who knows, but that Barry guy is pretty smart.

The Heavenly Bed is manufactured for Starwood Hotels & Resorts by Simmons. It features a no-flip 13” pillow-top mattress utilizing Simmons patented pocket coil design. The mattress is matched to a set of either 8 3⁄4 inch or 5 1⁄2 inch low profile box springs. The mattress is described as medium firm.

Pocket Coil Construction
Most traditional mattresses are constructed around a core of attached coiled springs. These springs are usually about 4 inches in diameter and are attached to one another at both top and bottom. Simmons uses their patented pocket coil system, which consists of smaller individual pocket coil springs. Each coil is made of heavy gauge steel, pre-compressed, then placed in a pliable, durable, non-allergenic fabric pocket (duon). In assembling the mattress, the pocketed coil springs are not joined at the top or bottom of the coils like ordinary mattresses, but along the side of each fabric pocket. This allows each coil to adjust individually to the weight and contour of the sleeper's body and better isolate the movement of each sleeper

Where most traditional mattresses utilize perhaps 200-300 springs, the Heavenly Bed utilizes approximately 850 – 1200 of the smaller pocket coil springs. Movement of one occupant of the bed (that sounds cold) is unfelt by the other. Being a very early riser and not wanting to disturb the beautiful slumbering Mrs. Xeno (the other occupant), I, and she like this feature.

The Pillow-Top

The pillow-top adds an additional layer of upholstery to the top of the mattress (loose downy fill), softening up the firm mattress a bit.  It also makes this a non-flip style mattress.

The Warranty
The Heavenly Bed is warrantied against manufacturing defects for a period of 10 years. This struck me as a surprisingly short period for a premium mattress. My first bed, by Stearns and Foster was warrantied for 30 years or until the Rapture (whichever came first). At first I thought perhaps the 10 year warranty period reflects anticipated problems down the road with the pillow-top.  But I have come to understand that the 10 year period is pretty common today.  And besides, have you ever tried to exercise a mattress warranty after several years?  Case closed.

What we really liked
Remember how we were discussing how good all beds feel in the showroom? Well, with The Westin Heavenly Bed by Simmons you can give it a test drive. Just check into any Westin Hotel (or other Starwood Resort Properties) that features The Heavenly Bed and actually sleep on it for the night. Given that you’re going to be sleeping on this bed for a number of years this could be a night or two away that is extremely well spent.

The Price and Where to Buy

At the time of our purchase you could buy the Heavenly Bed only at Westin’s at home web-site (westin-hotelsathome.com). We chose the King-sized mattress with the 8 3⁄4 inch box spring set priced at $1,650.00 including shipping. It can be ordered in any of six sizes from twin to California King. The bed can now be purchased at a number of internet sites.

My Viewpoint

In the little more than a year that we’ve owned this mattress set, we’ve continued to talk about just how much we love it. We’ve had not a moment of buyer’s remorse. We’ve recommended it to a number of friends who have gone on to purchase it and it’s been, well, a love-fest.

These days when you can spend upwards of $5,000 for a glorified air mattress, The Westin Heavenly Bed by Simmons is a gem to be treasured.

Rudi

This positive review was written in 2007, It is now September 2009. What is your opinion now, please? Would you write a new review, please. Also, do you know how often Westin replaces their mattresses?

Thanks, Rudi, for being so diligent in your quest for the perfect night's sleep. I, too, search until it nearly overcomes me when looking for any major purchase. Comparison shopping drives me NUTS! The internet only compounds the frustration...
You've answereed every question I had about this "piece of heaven" my wife has been raving about since last weekend's trip to a Chicago Westin.

Best regards,

Troy Miller

Great thanks! We are in the market for a new mattress since my husband has had this one for years and years. We will check this one out in our search, it sounds way more comfy then the one we got!

Great review! We own this product and I love it as well. We had a long tortured experience with several other mattresses and finally found this one and I could not be happier with it. You have inspired me to write a review about it as well.
