Well, depending on what you are selling, I used to sell stuff at half.com.  Amazon.com also let's you list items for sale, and I believe that is more like a store than an auction site.  I am not sure if either still works well or if they take a % out because I haven't done it in a long time, but there's a start for you!

craigslist.org is the best bet, just go the main site and find the city closest to you listed along the right hand side.

Half.com is owned by Ebay.

You know, I don't think I've ever been to craigslist yet I hear about it all the time!  I can say at least that everyone I know knows about it, so maybe that is a good place to sell.

I remember now that Half.com is owned by Ebay, been a long time since I sold stuff there.  I think though that Half.com let you sell items like a store for a set price rather than doing the whole auction deal.

ioffer.com is a place to sell where you only pay if you sell something. Costs nothing to list. However, it's a little time consuming because people like to barter rather than just pay the listed price so you have to go back and forth and come up with a price that you both agree upon. I have sold items on ioffer though and had no problems. It is REALLY slow loading though.

Yahoo has auctions as well, similar to ebay but cheaper and with much fewer listings. Expect to get your starting price for most items. Not much competition there but an easy way to sell stuff with lower fees.

Not sure what type of items you're trying to sell but if it's handmade, artsy stuff... check out Etsy.com.

If you have got new stuff to sell you can see www.DealsHotDeals.com  which is a new site and they will take very less percentage.

I agree with Craigslist....I have had  much more luck using CL than Ebay. However, I think it is best if you live in a metropolitan area.

ioffer.com sounds interesting though. I will have to go and check it out. I agree that Ebay and PayPal take WAY TOO MUCH a percentage.

I have sold quite a few things through Craig's list. Just check out the safety tips they offer before you post or buy...there are some weirdo's out there.

I have sold (and bought) a ton of stuff thru Craigslist too! It is perfect for baby goods, furniture, etc. Although definitely screen people bc some are really flaky. If it is art/creative, let us know-- there are a bunch of other sites for that!

Well if it's crafts you are wanting to sell my cousin told me about this auction website called Etsy. Everyone who wants to sell crafts(or just buy them) goes there.

Note: They are much, much cheaper then Ebay.

Shopit.com, facebook.com has a market place, if it's your own handmade arts or crafts, try www.etsy.com (see my review on the site for more info), art: www.artistrising.com (see mr review on this site for more info as well).

In testing the Facebook Marketplace through some of my listings, I'm noticing that I'm getting many suspicious responses from "unfaced" members that appear to be phishing e-mails. They state that they're interested in your item then ask questions that are already answered by the listing and while they're by different posters, the e-mail constantly seems to be the same. They don't want you to reply through Facebook marketplace, they want you to reply through your personal e-mail, which is what seems most suspicious. When I've tried replying to their inquiry through Facebook, they don't respond at all. It's annoying and I think I'm going to unlist and try elsewhere. . . Is anyone else having a similar problem?

If it is bulky items (not ship-able kind of stuff) craigslist.com is your best bet.  If you price it right, it will sell in the first day.  I have sold many items on there and you don't have to mess with Paypal, or Ebay, or the Postal Service.  The potential buyer will either email or call you and once a firm selling price is arranged they have to come to your home.  I suggest having a friend or neighbor with you when they arrive.  Make sure that you have their correct name and phone number before the final meeting...just in case.  I have not had any problems or any potential problems using craigslist, but I have heard of horror stories because the buyers are not real buyers.  So, talk with them on their phone number and you will get a feeling if they are truly people that you would want to know where you live.  And, as always, do not take checks, money orders, or cashiers checks as some people are faking these.   Take cash only and stipulate that in your ad. Its fun, free and easy to do to post ads.......plus if buying, you can get some really great deals.  Just check it daily and you may find yourself buying more than you are selling.

I heard that you risk losing a lot of sales if you limit purchasing to cash or creditcard sales only. So I do accept checks, but I always put a stipulation in my sales ad that checks, money orders and cashier check purchases must wait a 2 week validation verification. I do that because I am aware of the money orders and check scams.

To add my 2 cents... if you want to sell books/textbooks specifically, bigwords.com is particularly useful because it compares all the websites that are willing to pay you for your books.

Here's my source: http://www.akatoo.com/question.html?question_id=4898529

Besides books, i agree with the other posters about craigslist. I've heard of horror stories but have never experienced any.

Hello,
It all depends on what you are selling ........
If you are selling Antiques or Collectibles try a visit to Rubylane or TIAS.
They are not an auction site but work very similar to ebay without taking all your profits. Like others recommended Craigs list is great. I listed a boatmotor there
and sold it in 3 days ! and it was FREE !
I got fed up with all the ebay fees and policies and closed my store there.
I do still shop ebay but don't trust them because there are so many scam
artists there that they cannot monitor them.
Feedback is a joke since they "improved" the ratings system. I must say
I had 100% positive feedback and closed my store that had over 125 items.
Good Luck

I sell on Amazon and love it because you can list stuff for free until it sells. I have sold also on Ebay and don't like it. Amazon is so much easier compared to ebay. Also there is this one site called Kijiji. Kijiji is just like Craigslist, but better.

hi. i set up my nursery using Craigslist. My son was the 5th child and I wasnt about to buy a new nursery!! my only warning is to be careful. Some people werent reliable,  and never meet them alone. Good luck!

I found that Amazon is good for books and cds because of the traffic....  I've had no problems with them!

One friend told me about auctions.com (i think) for other items...she used to sell on ebay, but moved here and told me that many ebay sellers have moved to this more seller-friendly site...

Also, a friend who often sells on craigslist won't have them come to his house, but to a public place, like a gas station, busy store, etc.  As many people have mentioned, you need to be careful.  Of course, it does depend on the size of the object you are selling!

I have never used it, but there is a site called bidz.com that is kind of like ebay. Alos, check out community websites, like yahoo and such, they have groups for people who are trying to sell things.
