We Were Soldiers —

Mel Gibson, Sam Elliott, and Keri Russell star in this award winning movie.  The amazing story of these men, and the women who are left at home to carry one, is a must see film.

It's 1965 America is at war with North Vietnam and Lt. Col. Hal Moore, played by Gibson, must take his men into battle.  A leader on and off the battlefield and a true inspiration Lt. Col. Moore and 400 men fight against 2,000 enemy soldiers in the battle of La Drang Valley.  He promises that no man gets left behind, dead or alive and personally promised to be the first to step on the battlefield and the last to step off.
What you learn in this movie is that the army was not prepared to send officers and a minister to tell the wives of dead soldiers that they were widows.  Cabbies were sent with wired telegrams to give death notices to the wives, no counseling, no chaplains.  In the movie one wife took over the job to help ease the blow and lend support to widows.
What I liked about this movie is that it shows both sides strategies.  However, Lt. Col. Moore is always ready for the enemies plan.  The enemies leader was behind the scenes giving orders and the Col. was on the field with his men.  So despite being overrun, the American soldiers push on.

*Caution - Spoiler*
At the end of the movie, with tears in his eyes, Lt. Col. Hal Moore says, "I will never forgive myself; for my men dying and I didn't."  It's a real tear catcher.  True to his word he kept his promise, first one to step on the field, and last to step off.

There are amazing aerial flight scenes in this movie and aerial attack sequences.
With a winning musical score, outstanding cast, and excellent cinematography, you can't go wrong with, "We Were Soldiers."
