There is one great, incredible, fabulous reason to visit Washington, D.C. with kids: the Smithsonian Museum network. I've been to plenty of big cities with great museums, but visit even a few with kids (and the need to buy several tickets), and your wallet gets tapped quickly. Or you visit the free ones, and they are, well, worth the money. In Washington, D.C., there are several high-quality, vast, impressive museums that won't even bore the kids, and entry to every single one is free.

In fact, having grown in the a Washington, D.C. area, I still get peeved when I get charged to enter a museum....

I just returned from a trip to Washington, DC, and I would have to say that overall, I had a very good time. I think the best way for me to write my review is to just list the pros and cons:

Pros:

  1. It's a great place to learn about history and government.  There is a tremendous amount of museums, monuments, and other tourist attractions devoted to that purpose.
  2. Most of the aforementioned attractions are have free admission.
  3. The city has an excellent mass transit system.  The metro will take you to, or at least close to, just about anything you want to see.  It's also an easy system to navigate. ...

DC has something for everyone. There is a ton of stuff to do that will not cost any money. The Smithsonian museums are free - including the zoo. You should search online first, there are more free museums than most people are even aware of. There are free performing arts events each evening at the Kennedy Center. You can also see the monuments for free.

If you have some money to spend I suggest the Holocaust museum, which is one of the best in the world for museum design. The spy museum is also a great experience that costs money. If you are looking for performing arts events the Kennedy center,...

A visit to Washington, D.C is a must if you enjoy seeing museums and most of them are "free" (our tax dollars do pay for them). My favorite museum is the American History. Unfortunately is was closed for updates the last time I was there. Washington, D.C. has so many museums that you will need to plan your trip to make the most of your visit. Driving and parking in Washington is a head ache but you will not need your car, the Metro has trains that go near all the major landmarks and they are clean.

While at the National Mall make sure to visit the carousel and take a ride (it's free). From the top...

The museums are great!  The Natural History Museum is always great. This year they had a butterfly habitat that was great.  The art galleries are wonderful. My sons and I had a great time seeing everything. The new Museum of the American Indian is a tribute to the many different nations that make up the Indian people of the Americas'. The Holocaust Museum was a sad reminder of what we all have to be ever vigilant for. As always the people of Washington,DC were friendly and helpful whenever we needed directions. I don't know about my kids but I can't wait till I can go back again.
