I will soon be in need of a new washer.  I was leaning towards  a front load for water & detergent savings.  However, I have heard front loading machines have more problems than top loading machines.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Front-loaders are hyped for their energy and water savings and many people never have problems with them. However, I've read too many problems and would never get one. Top loaders last forever and never lock your clothes inside. The first time you lose two hours because your machine has a glitch and you can't remove the clothes, all thoughts of energy savings will go out the window.

I just went on to Consumer Reports and most front-loading brands have a much higher rate of repair than the average top loaper.

I agree with Bob - top loaders really are worth ti for us. I would love an LG Steam Wash, but after seeing a friend of mine have hers break after just 14 months, I'll keep to my ugly (and cheap!) top loader!

Thanks for your comments.  My sister in law's just broke too (Kenmore, not very old).  My washer is still working (very old) but doesn't do a great job of cleaning.  My dryer is on its last legs so I thought maybe I'd replace both.  As far as dryers go, I'm leaning towards a Samsung, though also considering LG.  I won't do Kenmore or Whirlpool.  Had a Kenmore (made by Whirlpool) oven that broke after 2 years.  It was just slightly less expensive to fix than to buy a new GE profile.  Needless to say, I have a bad taste in my mouth about those brands.  Do you have any recommendations on dryer brands?
