A confusing combination...

2

Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken was quite a bit of a confusing experience for me. First off, I am a Chinese food fanatic. Literally, I prefer the stuff over any other food available. Because I all to often indulge in Chinese take out, I was delighted when I saw Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken available in the frozen section, thinking I could save a little bit of money on takeout. Literally, a little bit! The stuff is a bit on the expensive side for being a frozen meal. Not really worth the price paid either. It's kind of strange. The chicken was pretty good, I could maybe eat it again. The broccoli was pleasant as well. The other parts were the problem. The carrots can't be cooked along with the rest of the meal for the full amount of time or, they will come out too mushy. The baby corn is nasty and leaves a not so welcome aftertaste. The rice is a tad bit too grainy or on the opposite end, it will be too mushy as well. Overall, as a whole experience, it is nasty, but, the chicken is okay.

Orange Chicken chinese style frozen meal by Wanchai Fairy.

Wanchai Fairy Orange Chicken is okay for a frozen chinese food entree. It definitely is saltier than I think is necessary, but that's pretty typical with chinese food. The flavor and texture were just okay. All in all its an average frozen entree with nothing to set it apart from others.

Is this a joke? TINY amount of chicken is very disappointing!

We bought this the other night only because it was discounted at our locai grocery store. When I opened the bag I thought they had forgotten to put a second bag of chicken in.... This is not Orange Chicken - this is Orange Vegetables with some chicken sprinkles! A complete rip-off. Do not waste your money. I hate getting cheated!

Quick, easy meal for when you just don't have time.

Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken is a great product that really lives up to it's claims. I made this last week when my boyfriend was over for dinner.  The bag claims it takes 14 minutes to prepare - and it took me about 16!  Not too shabby.  On the bag, there are a few suggestions for additions to the kit or side dishes. I did take that advice and added some fresh peppers and onions.  I am glad I did or we would have still been hungry!  We ate every last bite. The kit was low on chicken, I thought, but the chicken was excellent quality.  The sauce included was a little too sweet for my taste, and if I had to do it again, I wouldn't have added the entire packet.  However, it definitely had the "restaurant quality" the package claims! The rice packet included was easy to use - you just put it in the microwave - and the rice came out surprisingly fluffy and delicious. I think the price is a little high for what you get (more chicken would have made it worth it), but they are currently offering a coupon on their website, so that makes it a much better deal.  http://www.wanchaiferry.com/

There are a lot of good things to be said for this but .....

As a *devotee *of Oriental food -- especially citrus-flavored dishes -- I had great hopes for ***Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken***.  Anticipation kicked into high gear when my friend Jenny mentioned that she had cooked this for her family and thought it was "*a little salty*."  Jenny is an excellent cook but very conscientious about sodium content.  She pumps out excellent veggies and side dishes which are seasoned very lightly.  i always enjoy these foods at her house but when I am home, I tend  to season things a bit more ... so I blithely assumed that if something was "*a little salty*" for her, it might be just right for me.  Well, I owe Jenny an apology.  What **Lot's wife **turned into is a "*little salty*" compared to ***Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken***.  **WHAT THIS IS:** ***Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken ***is an Oriental dinner for two, containing separate components packaged in a large bag.  Everything you need is here except for the chopsticks.  Someone has gone to a lot of trouble for us Oriental food *devotees* --  there are pouches of top-drawer Jasmine white rice, tender fried chicken bite-sized pieces, and orange-flavored sauce, along with frozen veggies (broccoli, carrots, and ears of baby corn).  According to instructions, you brown the meat in hot oil for a few minutes before removing it and stir-frying the veggies with the sauce and 1/4 cup water for a few more minutes.  Add the chicken back in and continue cooking as the package directs.  (The rice is microwaved to perfection in a matter of minutes.)  As everything was cooking, I leaned against my kitchen counter and took a gander at the nutritional information.  **HOLY Fortune Cookie!** **STATS:** Information is given for both "*As Packaged*" and "*As Prepared*."  Since nobody is going to eat this just the way it comes, we'll just go with the "*As Prepared*."  Half of a prepared ***Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken ***dinner is a single serving which contains **610 calories with 200 calories from fat**.  There are 8 grams Total Fat, 1.5 grams Saturated Fat, zero Trans Fat, 25 mg. Cholesterol, **1,180 mg. Sodium**, 90 grams Total Carbs, 3 grams Dietary Fiber, 39 grams Sugars, and 15 grams Protein.  Also present  are 25% (D.V.) Vitamin A, 40% Vitamin C, 6% Calcium and 10% Iron.  In my opinion, the reason for the dramatic calorie and sodium counts is that too much sauce is included with the other dinner ingredients.  These counts are even more amazing because -- at least for a Oriental food *devotee* like me -- there was **not a whole bunch of food here**.  You could never stretch this dish the way it is to feed a whole family or even a hungry couple. **TASTE TIP:** There are a lot of good things to be said for ***Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken ***but if all the sauce is used in the preparation, everything ends up being smothered with it.  The taste of the sauce takes over and dominates everything else and probably generates in great part the sodium and other problems.  Because of the components being kept separate from each other, this is easy to fix -- **just use less of the sauce!**  The next time I make ***Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken***, I am going to use less of the sauce and more  other things, like extra stir-fry veggies (there are excellent frozen options out there), or perhaps I will stir in an 8-oz. can of drained, juice-packed canned pineapple.  Here's another idea -- during the last five minutes of cooking, I may stir in a half dozen Desert Glory cherry tomatoes, each cut in half.  The possibilities are endless here.   **MY VIEWPOINT:** There are a lot of things to like about ***Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken ***... too many good things not to recommend it.  Even though it was too sweet and (okay, okay!) a little too salty, I still enjoyed it.  One of its most important features is the way everything is packed** separately**, thus lending itself to variations and personalized adjustments in the way it is prepared.  If the finished product is fixed a little differently, I can heartily recommend this and indeed I intend to try it again myself.  (I should also mention that -- although ***Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken ***is a tad expensive -- there are many good sales and coupon promotions out there for this and the other ***Wanchai Ferry ***products.)   :

Cooking time was longer than expected.

Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken took me a lot longer to prepare than I expected.  First you have to cook the chicken in oil, then set it aside and cook the vegetables in a sauce. Since everything is frozen it takes some time.  The rice is then cooked separately in the microwave, which turned out great - fluffy and tasty. Total time to make the meal was 20 minutes which is not a quick meal. The chicken and vegetables tasted good but the sauce is too sweet and overpowering.  Also, the portion size is good but nothing to write home about. Would I buy it again?  Probably not, because there are other Asian-themed frozen foods on the market that are much easier to prepare and taste just about as good.

Wanchai Orange Chicken is Terrible

2

I recently bought a package of the Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken after finding a rather good coupon for it in a coupon insert from our local newspaper.  I had looked at the product in the store several times but had always avoided it simply because it was not within our family's budget, but with the substantial coupon and a sale, I decided to try it for dinner for just my husband and I one night (the kids were at granny's).  As usual the picture on the bag was tempting and seemed appetizing, but once the food started cooking, I could tell I was going to be disappointed.  Once cooked, I was even more disappointed with the lack of taste.  I take that back, it had taste, but the taste was comparable to a cardboard box.  Here are the three major faults I had with this particular product...first, the serving sizes were just way too small to satiate anyone.  Both servings together may have come closer to satisfying my husband after a long twelve hour day at work.  Secondly, the prep time took a little more time and effort than I normally like for a "convenience" meal as such.  Third, the taste was just absolutely horrible.  I will not be buying anymore of the Wanchai frozen meals, no matter how valuable a coupon I have!

Best Chinese food you can make at home

4

I bought Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken frozen dinner when it was on sale at my local grocery store, because I had tried another brand of frozen Chinese dinner once before and was disappointed.  However, this brand is great!!  The chicken tasted like real chicken not rubber, the rice was good and it took me all of 15 minutes from start to finish!  Just two small things... I think it was a little sweet for my taste so I would use just a little less of the sauce packet and it could use some more chicken. But other than that this will be something that is now on my menu at home!

Yummy, but not enough food

My kids and I loved the taste of this meal.  The chicken and sauce are delicious, the veggies are are firm, not mushy.  I especially liked that the rice tasted freshly steamed. The only con is that I had to make 2 bags to feed 3 of us. Maybe they will come out with a family sized bag.
