Walmart.com — 

There was a time, not so long ago, when I would choose Walmart other all other similar stores, given a choice.  Their prices tend to be lower, sometimes significantly, than competitors, which is key in my life.  However, a recent incident with them has caused me to re-evaluate where I shop.

About two months ago I made a purchase on Walmart.com.  It was a gift for my sister, who lives on the opposite side of the country and I made sure to mark it as such, complete with a card and note.  The item, a day-by-day Harry Potter 2008 calender, was on pre-order, set to be delivered "on or near Oct. 28."  On October 30th, I received an email from Walmart.com notifying me they were having complications shipping the item.  If I wished to cancel, they told me, I could.  Otherwise they would continue to try shipping the item for the next 10 days.  If they were unsuccessful then they would cancel my order themselves, and sorry for any inconvenience.

I immediately went to the website, trying to cancel the order.  After much time spent searching Walmart.com I came upon their order cancellation policy.  They simply do not allow it.  I contacted their customer service department with my request for the order to be canceled.  I received no acknowledgment whatsoever.  I repeated my request to their customer service department twice more, with the same results as the first request.

Eleven days after I received the email telling me of their shipping problem, I checked the status of my order.  It was still pending.  I again contacted the customer service department, reminding them that they had promised to cancel after 10 days.  I received a response the next day letting me know my order had been canceled and I would not be charged.

Three days later, I received another email from Walmart.com.  My order had shipped, thank you very much, have a nice day.  After contacting Walmart.com and reminding them that the order had been canceled, I was told that I was welcome to return the item once it was recieved.  Apparently they had not noticed that the order was a gift and that the shipping address was on the opposite side of the country as the billing address.
