I've had fish all my life.  I now have a 120gal, 55 gal, a 30 gal and a 10 gal quarentine tank with Goldfish in it.  Most people don't understand that when you newly set up your tank you have to let the biological filter (Bacteria that live on ammonia in your tank.  Ammonia is the waste product... review »

Living in the country has it's downsides.  My children have a 20 gallon tank needing some fish to enjoy in it.  So we drove 40 miles to the nearest place with fish, which was Walmart.

The fish looked ok, but I think they may have just cleaned the tanks out.  So we got 10 little fish of all sorts,...

I first started buying fish when my husband made me a small pond for my garden and the fish became pets for my children because they needed to be wintered indoors.

I bought my first fish for the pond at our local Walmart. While there I noticed a lot of sick looking fish, but I confess the even though I had researched the fish I wanted for my pond, I really knew nothing about other fish.

The first fish I purchased only lasted a couple days and went 'belly up'. I was dissapointed, but sure it was something I did wrong. Since Walmart had a return policy , I took my poor dead fish and sadly exchanged...

I used to work at Petsmart, so I saw fish getting shipped in every week in large cardboard boxes packed with styrofoam.  It looked pretty stressful, but most of them actually survived the trip.  I can't even imagine what Wal-Mart does to their fish to have such obviously stressed and sick looking fish.  Also, when I briefly worked at Petsmart (they're really no good either), I heard, "I bought some fish at Wal-Mart, adn now all my fish are dead."  There is no reason for a store like Wal-Mart to carry fish.

I have been looking for a "fighting beta" fish and notice that Wal-mart had them, but their colors didn't look right (dull) and the water they were in didn't look clean. I felt bad for the little fellas and I think I will stay away from Wal-mart's fish area for buying fish.

I spent almost an hour standing in the pet department at the local Wal-Mart waiting for an associate to assist myself and my crying son in buying a fish.  I should have known right then to pack it up and head for a larger town that offers a pet store...

After finally purchasing 4 goldfish and arriving home, I floated the bag as recommended.  When I returned, 2 of the fish were floating belly up already.  Needless to say, the other 2 soon joined our fishy friends with halos.

Upon contacting the store I was informed that there is no exchange policy on fish even if they die within 1 hour of purchase...

It's just plain sad that Wal-Mart is allowed to sell fish!  The fact that more of them end up floating than living is sick.  I don't know if they over or under feed them but it needs to stop.  I go shopping a Wal-Mart to periodically pick-up cat treats.  There is nothing more depressing then to see the look on a child's face when they look at all the floaters.  Those that do survive are on the verge of death.  A fish is not a product, its alive!

I have bought fish from Wal mart 3 times now and every time the fish die. The last time i bought the a Angel fish from Wal mart. Me and my son took him home everything was fine. I think is was 2 or maybe 3 days later not only the Angel fish was dead but are gold fish that we have had for almost 5 years was dead too. Now I have had fish for over 20 years and gold fish are one of the hardest fish to die. When i took back the fish to Wal mart and explained what happened the sales person told me there was nothing he could do for me. Stay away from Wal marts fish.

I have 3 fish tanks  in my apartment, a 75 gal. a 10 gal. and a 5 gal. The walmart fish never live for more than 2 weeks when we have bought them. When they die then my daughter becomes extremely sad and we have to have funeral to flush them to the sea. Ever since finding nemo she thinks it is funny to tell them they are going to the sea. I never buy walmart fish anymore, we always go to meijer or petco ( they are the best). lately though we don't buy any fish because ours keep reproducing and we have about 50 cichlids now.

I don't care a whit about Wal-Mart's service.  Every Wal-Mart I've ever been to has given me terrible service, those poor overworked, underpaid employees... anyway, about the fish- they were awful.  I've bought fish from them on several occasions and they have always gotten sick and died.  However I've never had any problems with the fish I've purchased from reputable fish suppliers or pet stores.

I had a tank and lots of fish that bought at patsmart, my neighbor told me the fish in walmart is cheaper and he bought fish for his son, but after one week all the fish in his tank were dead. DON'T BUY FISH FROM WALMART.

WalMart used to sell both male and female guppies. I am overwhelmed with males at this time and am in need of females, but every WalMart I have been to no longer sells the females. I think it is wrong to limit your fish in this way and it is very disappointing. Also, their tanks are rarely clean, I see dead fish on every visit!

NEVER BUY FISH FROM WALMART!!  ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK IN THEIR TANKS TO KNOW THAT THEY DONOT TAKE CARE OF THEIR FISH PROPERLY, AND THEIR FISH ARE REALLY UNHEALTHY.  ALWAYS GO TO A GOOD PET STORE!!

I have been into tropical fish keeping for over 15yrs, and have witnessed on more than on occasion, walmart employees improper handling of the fish they try to sell, not mention the fact I have seen them sell visiblily sick fish to customers. I  tell people I see in the store thinking about buying fish there, to rethink it and go to a local fish shop that has more knowledge and better policies on proper handling and treatment of their fish. Buyer Beware!!
