Walmart Any Fish —

I've had fish all my life.  I now have a 120gal, 55 gal, a 30 gal and a 10 gal quarentine tank with Goldfish in it.  Most people don't understand that when you newly set up your tank you have to let the biological filter (Bacteria that live on ammonia in your tank.  Ammonia is the waste product of your fish and will kill them if it gets too strong in the tank. The bacteria eat the ammonia, the fish produce the ammonia and everyone's happy.  A new tank has no bacteria so the first fish produce ammonia that increases in concentration till the fish die.) develop before your fish will live.  They set up their tank, buy a bunch of fish, then are upset that they all die and blame the store.  Set up your tank then get some sacrificial fish (feeder goldfish) to live in it for the first month (at least) to set up the bio filter.  I've always had great service from WalMart (tho sometimes you have to go find an associate to help you) and a 30 or 90 day return policy where they nevfer ask questions and either give me my money back or new fish.  I've only had a few fish die and with little exception it was really my fault (I got some corys then had to treat for parasites and the treatment killed the scaleless corys - just like the bottle said it would).  The best way to judge your Walmart is to ask questions of the associate.  If they are knowledgeable, you're off to a good start.  If they identify sick fish and won't sell them to you (Be careful - most sytems share water so one tank's diseases are shared with the other tanks.  Ask about their filtration and sterilization methods for their shared water.), your fish will probably do well.  Mosy of the fish I buy from WalMart these days are cichlids.  They are very beautiful and VERY hardy fish.  That might be some reason why my fish do well.
