Walmart - All locations, Nationwide —

(This review will also appear, almost verbatim, on a review of the movie Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price)

I couldn't sleep last night and was up late with nothing on the tube. I found Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price OnDemand and decided to watch it. To be honest, I'm half upset I did, as it changed my prospective of the retailer entirely. The movie was extremely interesting and followed the various effects that Walmart has on the local, national, and global economies. It begins with interviews of "mom and pop" shop owners who were snuffed out of their 50-year-old businesses when Walmart rolled into town, and how the chain has affected their livelihood and lives as a whole. It also talks, in depth, with former Walmart employees at various levels on the "food chain." Some of the statistics were eye-opening. Did you know that the benefits package offered to Walmart employees is so poor that Walmart suggests to their employees that they seek government assistance? Some of the topics discussed were unbelievable. It also takes a look at the Walmart factory in China. I can imagine that there is a lot more horror over there than they showed, but due to the Chinese government it would have been forbidden for them to discuss the conditions, nevermind film it.

I have a Walmart within a quarter mile from my home. I don't buy much there, but I do pop in on a weekly basis to buy cleaning supplies, dog food, a card, maybe a DVD to watch. I can tell you with full certainty that I will NEVER give them another red cent. In this economy you have to be wise to where you spend your dollars. I don't want to buy into a multi-billion dollar company that can't even "afford" to give its employees decent healthcare (to the point where they are on WIC and Medicaid and we end up paying for them anyway) and has such shady business practices. I want my dollars and cents to go to the mom and pops, the independent and private retailers who care about their customer and the quality of the product they sell.

I can tell you that once you watch this movie you'll feel the same... so if you enjoy shopping at Walmart it might be best to keep your blinders on. While they may roll back high prices have we ever considered how those high prices are achieved? Do we even care? Well, I care. And the fact of the matter is, with a coupon and a little extra effort on your behalf, you could probably find the same price if not cheaper at another retailer. A retailer who has fair business practices, actually gives back to the community, and isn't some faceless corperate giant reaping the benefits for himself while raping the consumer and the employee.

Is this on the TV or a rental on DVD. I'd love to see the show. Very nice review.

This program was an eye-opener for me as well. We do not shop at Wal-mart anymore, though we used to shop there at lease once a week. I have found that by shopping around and using coupons and such I can better the prices I used to pay ay Wal-mart and I feel much better about myself and showing my children that making a stand sometimes involves personal sacrifice. And besides most of the stuff we bought at Wal-mart were cheaply made and didn't last long anyway...
