Wall-E —
Warning: This review contains a mild spoiler.
WALL-E, despite what many are taking, is not about killing Walmart. It's not about electronics being evil. It's not about obesity (I find it silly people expect humans who've done nothing but sit in their chairs all their lives to not be large, and this is coming from a teen who is large herself. Honestly, I'd find it more offensive if everybody was thin because it looks prettier and has more cinematic glitz.) It's not even about cleaning up Earth (but I never saw the problem with recycling.) WALL-E is, in it's deepest form, a movie about what love and kindness can do to people. It's not a phophetic story about the future, but an allegory for the now, in a world where we don't even know who our next door neighbor is many times.
But anyway, WALL-E is different. Anybody who goes to see this movie is going to noice that. It breaks into many things that family animation don't generally break into. It includes music that isn't popular, a love story as the focus, characters who speak more through actions instead of words, and actually asks people to be patient with it so it can tell a beautiful story to them. A lot of people arn't going to like the movie because of that. Does that mean it's a bad movie? No. Absolutely not. If moviegoers will give it a chance, and not treat it like it's a kid's film simply because it's G and animated, it's a beautiful movie all around.
First, and most important in any film, the story is dynamic and original. The characters are unique and interesting. The plot, all around is fantastic to the point that there are a lot of things I simply refuse to reveal to anybody who hasn't seen it as if I made a vow to my Lord in heaven not to. No moment in this movie is wasted.
And, of course, as par for a PIXAR film, the graphics are incredible. I've talked to people who thought it was live action from the trailer, and at first I thought the same when I saw a picture of it. It's not just an extra pretty trailer. The whole movie is gerogously animated and rendered.
The music, different as it is, is beautiful. Thomas Newman was brought back for a reason. His soundtrack for WALL-E is one of the few I can listen to over and over as if it were a rock CD. It's filled with so much emotion. Then you hav Ben Burtt doing sound, and all I can say is this is the guy who made R2-D2 talk. That describes how good the sound effects are better than anything I could describe.
I could keep gushing. I could go into a ton of great things about this movie, but I think you get my point without me giving too much away. Yes, you're toddler isn't going to get it. But if that's what you're expecting WALL-E to be, you're looking in the wrong place to begin with. WALL-E is a movie. Not a kid's movie. Not an adult movie. A movie. Pure and simple. And it's fantastic in that purity.
