I’ve always been a fan of Disney movies and getting older I’m not ashamed to admit that Pixar flicks are probably my favorite. I was a little unconvinced, though, watching previews for Wall-E. Could this high-tech themed film really compare to classics like Toy Story and Finding Nemo? I’m usually more of a traditional girl: I’ll take my Aladdin over Stitch any day. And to top it off, Wall-E has almost no dialog. Robots jetting around and not even talking? I thought it was a long shot but whether it was out of boredom or curiosity I found myself at the midnight showing on opening night expecting to find the theater to be empty.

I couldn’t have been more wrong or more surprised. The theater was packed with an audience primarily made up of adults, ranging from 18-30. And Wall-E did not disappoint. From the short clip that always precedes Pixar films to the end of the movie, we were all roaring with laughter. In fact, I would venture to say that the clip about a magician and his magic rabbit is probably my favorite short Pixar has released, surpassing even the famous “For the Birds” cartoon.

True to form, there is very little dialog in the movie that chronicles the love of Wall-E, a robot left on earth when humans abandoned the planet for a “space cruise” and a futuristic robot named Eva, sent from the human mother-ship. However, Pixar does an excellent job of capturing the nuances of emotion in the interaction of the two ‘bots.

And like other Pixar films, it really is funny. Adults will appreciate the subtle humor (as Wall-E is left confused by a spork: should he put it in the fork pile? Or the spoon pile?) and social commentary (humans shuffle around on hovercrafts too obese to walk) while kids will love the physical comedy (the curious little robot finds himself nearly disassembled throughout the movie). For families though, really young children might not enjoy it as much as older folks just because the story is so non-verbal.

Overall, like all Disney classics, it’s a feel-good movie at heart.

I personally really enjoyed Wall-E and would recommend it to the young at heart. I would slate it right up there with my favorite animated films like Toy Story, A Bug’s Life and Finding Nemo.

Thanks for sharing. My little guy (and hubby) want to see this one. If he gets to go it will be his second theatre experience.

In response to Meredith's comment from Jun 27, 2008 at 3:27PM:

Just goes to show you that even in the year 2700 - sporks will continue to be one of the most persistent conundrums in this universe. ;-)

I'm already cracking up about the spork. Gotta go see this now thanks to your review... the first one of Wall-E on VP!
