The plethora of search engines available on the World Wide Web is astounding. I would have to say that Google by far is the most popular one to use with perhaps Yahoo and MSN following suit. But have you ever heard of Winzy? Neither did I until my wife discovered it.

Winzy is a search engine where you can win free prizes. You heard me correctly. There is always a chance to win a prize just by making a search. I thought it was too good to be true until I won a few $5 Amazon gift certificates just for using the search engine.

There are three basic ways to win free prizes:

1) Search and Win Instantly
It’s really simple. By searching through Winzy, the chances of winning are always there. I’ve been finding out lately that you really have two chances a day to win prizes. Either a slot machine or a winning wheel will pop up allowing you a chance to see what prize you will win. It ranges from points (10-500 points), gift certificates ($5 from Amazon) or an iPod Nano.

2) Invite Friends — If They Win, You Win, Too!
It’s a real simple concept to grasp. For each person that signs up under you through your unique referral link, you will receive a bonus 250 points. Every time they win a prize, you win that same prize as well. For example: if my friend wins 500 points, I will also receive 500 points. I signed up under my wife so we have been sharing in the winnings. I won a $5 Amazon gift certificate so she received one as well just because of my win. The same thing happened to me when one of my friends won a $5 Amazon gift certificate. I also received the same prize as a result. Now replace $5 Amazon gift certificate with iPod. Yes, the smiles will be bigger.

3) Earn Points to Enter Monthly Sweepstakes
Obviously, getting the points is going to be the most frequent prize. Points are also earned when you do searches. Each search is worth 1 point (unless you are a Gold Star Member where it’s worth 2x the amount). There is a maximum number of searches that can be made a day for these points. Once accumulated at the end of the month, they are entered into a monthly drawing. The more points, the more chances of winning the grand prize of $1000.

There are many other ways of earning points and prizes. By becoming a Gold Star Member, a lot more options are available, such as increased number of searches, points earned by searches, monthly sweepstakes entries, and exclusive sweepstakes and promotions.

By becoming a Winzy Fan Club Member, you need to have signed at least 1 new friend every month. Once you have 5 Winzy friends, you become a permanent Winzy Fan Club Member. Besides earning an extra 250 points for each new friend, you are also automatically entered into the month-end $300 Amazon Gift Card sweepstakes for every friend that joined during that month.

Adding a Winzy Button on your website promotes your invitational link. Each unique hit earns you an extra 5 points.

And, of course, playing the Arcade Games can help increase (or decrease if you are unlucky) your points as well.

Is Winzy worth the hassle? If you are looking for some fun and are lucky to win some prizes, then this site may be for you. But if you are using it strictly as a search engine, then you might want to steer away. While options do pop up whenever you enter a selection, it is very limited. The search function isn’t as powerful as Google or Yahoo. But if it manages to get you an Amazon Gift Card or an iPod Nano, then I guess no one is going to complain too loudly.
